Postdoctoral Research Associate

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The Willits Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral associate to support research focused in the broad areas of neuroregeneration and mechanobiology on Northeastern's Boston Campus. Excellent communication skills are required and a background in biomaterials synthesis and characterization; in vitro testing; or preclinical testing is recommended. This position is annually renewable. It is expected that the postdoctoral associate will develop and execute a career development plan in coordination with the PI.

Responsibilities:
Our laboratory values diversity and expects all lab members to foster a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment. The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:
  • Synthesize, purify, conjugate and characterize biomaterials
  • Design, implement, and analyze repeatable experiments for both in vivo and in vitro testing (in collaboration with the supervisor and other personnel)
  • Provide meticulous documentation, analysis, and summarization of results (including digital/photographic documentation and computational/modeling/analysis as needed)
  • Foster a safe, collaborative environment
  • Develop and write reports, publications, and grants
  • Attend and participate in research meetings/seminars and journal club
  • Participate in career development training workshops/sessions and networking opportunities for research and mentoring
  • Guide and mentor graduate or undergraduate students, including participation in training to improve these skills as needed.

  • It is expected that the postdoctoral associate will develop and execute a career development plan in coordination with the PI.

About our lab: The overarching goal in our laboratory is to design 3D environments that control cell response, with a particular emphasis on neuro-regeneration. In order to achieve this goal, we have put forth a significant effort to understand the behavior of cells and enhance neural cell response in biologically-relevant three-dimensional scaffolds. Over the past 20 years, our laboratory has manipulated the extracellular microenvironment to increase peripheral nerve regeneration and study the effects of environmental changes on stem cells. We work within a supportive team environment with trainees ranging from high school students to postdoctoral associates.

    Qualifications:
Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar. All candidates should describe how they support a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment inside and outside the laboratory. This position requires excellent communication skills, both interpersonal and scientific, oral and written.

    Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates should be enthusiastic about working in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary, and multi-project environment. The successful candidate will be able to work both independently and collaboratively. Detailed knowledge of bioengineering, materials science, and/or neuroscience is a considerable asset, as is experience with animal experiments.

    Salary Grade:
    10

    Additional Information:
