Adjunct Instructor, Intervention Research

The School of Social Work at Simmons University seeks an adjunct instructor to teach Intervention Research to Social Work PhD students in the Summer 2021 semester. The Summer 2021 is a condensed 7-week term - course dates are May 27 - July 8, 2021.
The Summer term is remote with classes held online. Each class session will be held for 3-hour live sessions on Thursdays from 10AM - 1PM EST, with a 90 minute lab session on Mondays from 5:30-7:00PM EST each week. In addition, students will have 90 minutes of asynchronous learning time each week. The instructor is expected to be available to meet with students one-on-one through video calls, in lieu of office hours, as needed. Most PhD students are returning to graduate school having worked in the field for many years. These courses are designed to be student-friendly while at the same time delivering substantial content.
Course Title and Description
SW 624: Intervention Research
This PhD-level course focuses on preparing advanced graduate students with the knowledge and skills needed to design and evaluate interventions that address social needs, problems, and conditions. Students learn to:
- Identify and assess the social-environmental factors involved
in defining a specific need, problem, or condition;
- Analyze a need, problem, or condition relevant to a particular
population and identify appropriate interventions;
- Assess the theoretical and empirical support for alternative
interventions that address a selected need, problem, or condition
with a particular population;
- Describe and apply a logical sequence of research activities
that guides the design, implementation, and evaluation of
interventions;
- Select and apply appropriate research methodology in developing
an intervention;
- Demonstrate awareness of the interplay of different levels of
intervention and moderators such as age, class, culture, disability
status, ethnicity, gender, language, race, religion, and sexual
orientation in designing, implementing, and evaluating an
intervention;
- Generate hypotheses for guiding empirical inquiry for testing
interventions.
Qualifications:
- Candidates should have a Ph.D., preferably in the social
sciences
- Have prior graduate-level teaching experience, preferably
experience teaching online
- A record of research that includes intervention research as
demonstrated through peer-reviewed publication within the past 5
years
- Familiarity with Moodle
- Strong communication skills, ability to provide mentorship and
guidance remotely by email, phone and or video call, and
willingness to offer extensive feedback on student work
