The Department of Neurolgy is seeking aResearch Specialistto work under the general supervision of a faculty investigator this research Specialist is responsible for performing analyses and experiments related to improving cancer therapy. Work requires use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. The planned experiments involve cell culture and animal models, as well as molecular biology techniques. Uses understanding of theory behind experiments and applies analytical skills to implement assigned projects. Troubleshooting of experiments is needed as necessary.

This laboratory based scientist will perform experiments which include: tissue culture of cancer cells, small animal procedures, preclinical drug development, and molecular biology such as: purifications; quantitative and qualitative analyses, PCR and western blotting. Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, thermocycler, pH meter, analytical balance, light microscope, and/or utilizes laminar flow hoods.

The Research Specialist operates lab computers for data entry, data analysis, data reporting and maintenance of laboratory databases. May utilize in vivo models in experiments. May collect and establish primary cell cultures from blood and/or tissue specimens from the operating room. Maintains cell lines through procedures which may include passaging, cryopreservation, and drug testing. Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports. Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt and maintains laboratory inventory.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs laboratory tests utilizing requisite lab equipment and instruments, and perform data analysis under the supervision of the laboratory director and laboratory manager.
  • Responsible for laboratory maintenance, organization of supplies and storage, preparing solutions, reagents and media and ordering supplies, biological sample banking and biological and chemical safety compliance.
  • Helps create and maintain an inventory of laboratory supplies and experimental samples.
  • Assist with animal procedures and experiments in the lab as needed.
  • Willingness to be trained to handle experimental animals (rodents) is helpful for this position, that include anesthesia, physiological and behavioral monitoring, performing injections, and record keeping. Prepares tissue for study utilizing histochemical techniques. Injects animals according to protocols. May work with in vivo models in experiments.
  • Performs laboratory tests and/or experiments following established procedures or protocols. Operates requisite laboratory equipment and instruments; records data; maintains and adjustments to equipment.
  • Prepares, cleans, sterilizes, and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments used in research experiments.
  • Monitors inventory levels and orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualification:

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field. One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree. Experience or training with Cell and Tissue Culture, Polymerase Chain Reaction(PCR), molecular biology , protein expression, Western blotting, cell viability studies, and immunofluorescence are sought for this position.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or laboratory environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
