Based in Baltimore, MD, USA.

May involve up to 10% travel, depending on how the COVID-19 pandemic evolves.

Position summary:

We are seeking a person to fill an anticipated opening as a research associate within the Global Disease and Epidemiology Control Program (GDEC) in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The position is to join the team working on the Lives Saved Tool ( LiST ) project. This is a faculty position with an appointment in the GDEC program.

LiST is a mathematical modeling tool whose primary aim objective is to model the impact of scaling up maternal, newborn, child health and nutrition interventions in low- and middle-income countries. Funded primarily by the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation with support from other organizations, this tool has been used extensively for project and program planning, for evaluation, and for advocacy. The tool is managed and updated by a team within the Institute for International Programs (IIP).

In this position, the applicant would be joining this team to provide support as a project coordinator, coupled with communications and data analysis roles. While we generally work collaboratively, this position would report to the project’s PI, Dr. Neff Walker.

Specific functions:

Communications (20% LOE)

  • Update and manage LiST’s online presence, including the English and French websites and Twitter presence.
  • Draft and disseminate emails with news from the LiST team and updates.
  • Actively promote the use of LiST
  • Respond to or redirect inquiries sent to info@livessavedtool.org and follow up as necessary.


Training (20% LOE)

  • Serve as primary facilitator for LiST training both internally (i.e., as a guest lecturer for classes at JHSPH) and externally on request (i.e., for other external partners such as UN agencies, local universities, and others) in both English and French.
  • Update and maintain training materials in both English and French to reflect the most recent updates to the software and/or in response to specific partner needs.


Data analysis (30% LOE)

  • Provide support for or lead manuscript writing and data analysis.
  • Use the Lives Saved Tool to produce child and or maternal mortality or nutrition estimates for third-party stakeholders.
  • Assist in the performance of literature reviews to update the model’s evidence-base.


Project management (30% LOE)

  • Tracking all reporting requirements and deadlines; coordinating actors engaged in task assumption; and coordinating responses to special requests.
  • Document and troubleshoot software bugs and errors with the third-party developer team.
  • Recognize and be responsive to the needs of the team as they evolve.


Required

  • Masters level training in public health or related field (e.g., MSPH or MPH).
  • Fluency in written and spoken French and English.


Assets

  • 2+ years of experience working in global health.
  • Familiar with or willing to learn Squarespace, Twitter, and Mailchimp.
  • Prior experience working in low- or middle-income countries.
  • Prior experience working in the areas of nutrition, maternal and child health.
  • Prior experience working in a coordinator or project management role.
  • Knowledge of global MNCH&N related technical concepts and terminology.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, and to handle multiple projects and priorities.
  • Strong, persuasive oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with a multicultural and diverse team with various levels of training and understanding.
  • Knowledge of additional languages (particularly Portuguese).
  • Willing to innovate and create opportunities for him-, her- or themself.
  • Flexibility, willingness to learn new things and to adapt to new circumstances, and a sense of humor.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
