City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 70,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education.
Under a Title V: Caminos al Éxito: Pathways to Success cooperative grant agreement, Wright College has partnered with Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) on project initiatives aimed at improving the academic support structures for low-income, first generation students from diverse backgrounds by expanding services in financial education, student support, and transfer pathways.
The program is designed to develop a strong, collaborative pathway from Wright’s Guided Pathways to Success (GPS) & Tailored Transfer Advising to NEIU’s meta majors, creating tailored transfer advising support and career preparation for Hispanic/Latinx and low-income students, and a process that prepares students for bachelor’s degree completion and entrance into postgraduate study or a career. Students in the program are a part of a Guaranteed Dual Admission (GDA) student cohort with access to Title V program staff and activities, and other appropriate academic and student support services.
Reporting to the Director of Student Development Projects, the Transfer Cohort Advisor engages and works with students in a Guaranteed Dual Admission (GDA) cohort and their parents to provide academic, personal and career advising in support of their completion of academic studies at the college and in planning for a four-year degree at NEIU.
The Transfer Cohort Advisor works to effectively scale and target advising efforts for new Hispanic/Latinx students through an intrusive advising model in collaboration with key stakeholders and the program’s transition and retention team. Performs related duties.
Note: The Transfer Cohort Advisor has a dotted line/indirect reporting relationship to the Associate Dean of Student Services.
• Works with key stakeholders and program staff to plan and build a structure that engages, advises and supports transfer students and their families.
• Collaborates with program team to evaluate students’ academic strengths and needs, academic and professional goals, and sense of social belonging.
• Prepares individual advising success plans that connects student to appropriate supports and student services to increase academic achievement and self-efficacy.
• Develops and implements activities to enhance the freshman and sophomore experience at Wright to support early goal-setting and academic success that translate into degree attainment.
• Advises students on class selection and degree planning based on academic pathways in coordination with college Career Advisors to ensure a seamless transition.
• Refers students to Wellness Center for needed support services in areas of social-emotional problem-solving, mental health service, and connection to external social services.
• Facilitates workshops for student cohorts and their families to support successful transfer planning to NEIU. Assists students in making a smooth transition in coordination with NEIU staff.
• Works collaboratively with program staff in organizing student activities at Wright and NEIU focusing on student retention and transfer.
• Participates in developing and organizing a formal orientation program and summer bridge workshops for student GDA cohorts transferring into NEIU.
• Must be able and willing to work some evenings and weekends, as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Counseling, or a related field. Master’s Degree preferred.
• Two years of experience in a higher education student services environment desirable.
• Bilingual/Bicultural - Spanish/English preferred.
• Demonstrated experience in serving disadvantaged populations. Sensitivity and commitment to needs of low-income, first generation students from diverse backgrounds.
• Knowledge of academic programs, articulation agreements, transfer guides, assessment and academic career advisement highly desirable.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills required.
• Ability to work with and relate to a culturally diverse student body, faculty and staff.
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Ability and willingness to travel between Wilbur Wright College and Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center, as needed.
Chicago residency is required for all full-time employees within six (6) months of hire.
