Job Corps Scholars Counselor (Grant Funded)

Salary: $42,485

This is a grant-funded position. Grant-funded positions expire either at the end of the stated term or whenever funding for the position ceases.

The College is looking for exceptional colleagues. We seek candidates with: (1) an understanding of the college mission and teaching experience in a comprehensive community college; (2) a focus on student success in a learner-centered environment; and (3) a willingness to use technology to support learning in the academic setting, including on-line instruction and assessment of student learning outcomes.

MVCC is seeking to fill a full-time position in our Department of Labor funded Job Corps Scholars program. MVCC's Job Corps Scholars project provides low income eligible youth ages 16-24 with rigorous academic instruction, occupational skills training, and viable pathways to college and careers. Job Corps Scholars Counselors provide intensive career and personal counseling to the program participants in order to support their progress through the program and their transition to employment in tech and trades fields.

Key responsibilities for this position include:

  • Interviews program participants to determine eligibility and assist with initial assessment of individuals;
  • Assists students in assessing educational, career, financial and personal needs and develops educational plans;
  • Serves as program liaison and student advocate within the College community, coordinating and referring students to College resources as needed;
  • Assists in planning and implementing events and workshops with students;
  • Utilizes a range of technologies and educational software, as well as database management, data collection and documentation.

Qualifications:


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology or related field
  • Must possess a strong commitment to helping young people succeed in an innovative training program to reorient their lives, nurture their leadership skills and enable them to make a difference in their community
  • Ability to establish rapport and relate sensitively to a multiracial and multicultural group of young people
  • Effective interpersonal and problem- solving skills and the ability to relate to a wide range of issues, people and institutions
  • Effective public speaking, listening and written communication skills
  • Team-oriented with a sense of humor and non-judgmental attitude
  • Ability to travel to multiple work sites and possession of a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and for the duration of employment


Preferred Qualifications:

  • M inimum of three (3) years’ counseling, or crisis intervention experience with young adults
