Become a peer coach for this summer’s “Speak Up and Speak Out” Debate Intensive, presented by the Office of Collaborative Partnerships. You will have an opportunity to apply previous competitive debate experience by coaching and mentoring area high school students as they acquire and practice debate skills. Goals for AUM Peer Coaches: 1) To identify various methods of coaching debate. 2) To practice methods and approaches to providing feedback to students. 3) To anticipate and respond to varying levels of debate and speaking skills. Daily responsibilities: 1) Assist instructor(s) in debriefing and planning for each day’s events 2) Provide feedback to students during content lectures and discussions, and after practice debates 3) Aid students in researching and writing debate cases 4) Accompany students throughout campus, facilitate conversations during lunch and break periods 5) Assist in any room set-up and tear-down

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Time commitment: – Pre-Intensive: 1 day of mandatory AUM employee training (pref. Wednesday 7/21 or Thursday 7/22) & 1 day of coaching training – Intensive week: Monday – Friday, 7/26 – 7/30, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. – Post-Intensive: half-day of debriefing (pref. Monday afternoon, 8/2 or Tuesday morning 8/3)

Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements: – At least one season of competitive high school or collegiate debate experience in any style debate (Public Forum, Lincoln- Douglas, Team Policy, Congress, World, Parli, IPDA, BP) – Teachable and willing to be coached on feedback style – Able to work with high school students – Available during week of 7/19-23, 7/26-30, and 8/2 or 8/3
