Woodbury University invites applications for a Career and Outreach Coordinator in the School of Architecture. This position is for the school to engage and enhance institutional, student, and alumni connections to practice.

The Career and Outreach Coordinator acts as the primary liaison between Woodbury University School of Architecture and local and regional architecture and interior design firms and related industries. They also maintain a network of professional relationships towards facilitation of co-curricular enhancements, such as, fieldwork projects and work experience, and the direction of students and alumni towards job opportunities. This position may require travel.

This position qualifies University sponsored employee benefit plans and programs (e.g., group health insurance, life insurance, tax deferred annuity plan, annual vacation, sick, and paid holidays), subject to the eligibility requirements and conditions of each plan and program.   

Responsibilities (Estimated % of Time)                           

OUTREACH TO FIRMS (20%)

  • Engage, track, and coordinate the status of local and regional architecture and interior design firms and related industries,
  • Enable communications between the profession, the university, students, and alumni by maintaining contact information and by mutually conveying activities, events, lectures, and openings, (in collaboration with the SoA Director of Communications)
  • Work with staff and faculty and lead efforts on career and outreach programs and initiatives,
  • Lead career fair organization efforts on both campuses by inviting disciplinary representatives to interact with the academic community,
  • Coordinate other practice-based events that support students in their career pathways.
  • Partner with AIA San Diego on the annual career fair for San Diego programs,

ADVISING (20%)

  • Develop career, internship, and job-search mentoring and oversight services for students and alumni,
  • Provide advice to faculty and staff on communicating career-readiness strategies through advising and curricular exchanges with students,
  • Organize professional portfolio design, resume building, and interviewing skills reviews and workshops for students and alumni.
  • Serve as advisor to the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and as the AIAS Architect Licensing Advisor.

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION (20%)

  • Manage and advance the Integrated Path the Licensure (IPAL) initiative, working with firms and students to facilitate progress toward architecture licensure,
  • Serve as Architect Licensing Advisor, disseminating information, advising/mentoring students and alumni in the licensure and certification process for each program,
  • Attend the NCARB licensing advisors conference and other similar professional events on a regular basis,
  • Develop program for students to advance toward their NCIDQ certification,
  • Coordinate between the school, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), the California Architects Board (CAB), the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications (NCIDQ), the California Council for Interior Design Certification (CCIDC), and other relevant professional organizations.

WORK EXPERIENCE (20%)

  • Help students and alumni secure jobs by connecting them to appropriate position openings, by maintaining an accessible forum of opportunities,
  • Maintain a database to track job placement and alumni employment, and
  • Partner with Woodbury University Career Development staff, for example, on the First Destination Survey to better understand where our graduates are working, etc. and on other projects.
  • Streamline work experience process through collaboration with career services and representatives of the School of Business, MCD and College of Liberal Arts.
  • Develop and maintain employment policies for the university and Handshake platform.
  • Assist with review of Woodbury Integrated Student Experience (WISE) initiative, especially in the area of work experience.

SUPERVISE STAFF AND OPERATIONS: (20%)

  • Manage budget for events and outreach activities, develop sponsorship opportunities and sponsor professional programs and events, oversee daily operations of the SoA Career and Outreach office, delegate tasks to student workers, develop systems to support operations,
  • Coordinate with the dean on development activities for the Career and Outreach office,
  • Partner with University Departments on institutional research processes, including coordination on alumni surveys.

 

Requirements:

  • Terminal degree in career counseling or a related field with architecture familiarity OR Professional architecture degree with a career counseling background, OR equivalent experience
  • Excellent communication, research, and verbal and visual presentation skills,
  • Knowledge of architecture and associated design fields’ employment strategies – alternative, innovative, and traditional,
  • Ability to inspire working relationships between the School of Architecture and the profession, and
  • Ability to provide effective, confidential, responsive, and tailored mentoring to students and alumni.
  • Familiarity with Southern California architecture and interior design firms and related industries or a background in similar community networking,
  • Architectural, interior design, or related training,
  • The ability to evaluate and critique an architecture and interior architecture student portfolio, and
  • Experience in career counseling, planning, and employment services within architecture, interior design, or related industries.

This position is designated as Campus Security Authority (CSA) based on the job functions:

A Campus Security Authority (CSA) is an individual, who by virtue of their university responsibilities and under the Clery Act, is designated to receive and report criminal incidents to the Department of Public Safety so that they may be included and published in the university's Annual Security Report.

Physical Requirements:

  • Close vision, hearing/listening, and clear speech.
  • Manual hand/fingers dexterity.
  • Combination of sedentary work, kneeling, stooping, bending, sitting, squatting, standing, etc.
  • Works with/around and has verbal and face-to-face contact with others.
