Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Virginia Commonwealth University’s division of Audit and Compliance Services seeks a talented executive for the position of Deputy Director, University Audit. This individual will lead a team in complex audit functions and provide comprehensive services to VCU .
Specific duties include:
•Manage and participate in University audit team’s day to day operations including
planning, execution, work paper review and reporting phases for scheduled
audits, monitoring projects, special projects and investigations.
•Ensure high quality work consistent with IIA standards including identification of
significant project level risks: development of relevant project objectives, work programs
and audit tests that employ data analytics when possible.
•Develop practical recommendations and succinct, well written reports that address the
root cause of the finding.
•Develop and maintain effective working relationships with university personnel, external
auditors and other stakeholders, demonstrating a high degree of professionalism as a
representative of the department.
•Work as a member of the department’s management team to develop long-term plans
and strategies. Identify efficiencies and areas for improved department performance.
•Oversee and participate in annual risk assessment, evaluating university, departmental
and industry risks and formulate a risk-based audit work plan.
•Recruit, develop, retain and manage performance of team members. Observe and
recognize excellent performance and take timely action to resolve performance issues.
•Review and approve draft training plans. Ensuring team members have the appropriate
training and tools to succeed.
•Complete continuing education sufficient to stay abreast of emerging trends and risks
in the VCU environment, higher education industry and audit profession.

Minimum Hiring Standards

•Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field with
significant coursework in accounting
•CPA, CISA or CIA certification or business related Master’s Degree
•Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles and auditing standards
•Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing to all levels of
•Audit and Compliance team and VCU and affiliates’ management
Experience in accounting, auditing and business process analysis or related activities
•Comprehensive knowledge of internal controls, both automated and manual
•Ability to maintain integrity, objectivity, independence and confidentiality
•Ability to perform as a team member, ability to work well in a diverse, dynamic
environment
•Effective interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with department and
client personnel
•Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
Ability to manage work load to meet deadlines
•Ability to be self-motivated to perform assigned tasks
•Demonstrated ability to respect individual diversity and the rights of others and being
accountable for decisions and actions
•Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Hiring Standards

•Experience in higher education or knowledge of higher education concepts and terms
•Experience with automated audit management software and data analytics
•Experience supervising professional team members, preferably audit teams
•General knowledge of information technology processes and controls
•Contribute to VCU’s ethical standards including respect, honesty,
responsibility, diversity, equity and inclusion
