Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of medical physics division of VCU Massey Cancer Center’s Department of Radiation Oncology is to provide leading-edge radiation therapy to patients through High-quality clinical services and advanced technologies, Investigation and implementation of improved treatment planning and delivery technologies, Research programs designed to improve the efficiency and efficacy of radiation therapy, and Clinical trials to assess the clinical efficacy of radiation treatment modalities. Massey both develops and participates in study protocols at the local, regional and national levels. Additionally, the division of medical physics is improving cancer care on local and national levels through comprehensive undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate educational programs, training the next generation of physician and medical physics scientists. We offer a Ph.D. program in medical physics and a post-graduate residency program in radiation oncology physics. The division is staffed by 18 faculty physicists, 13 dosimetrists, two engineers and six research or clinical trainees.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Department of Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System has an immediate opening for a therapeutic medical physicist ( TMP ). We are seeking an academically orientated Ph.D. level faculty TMP with clinical, research, and educational responsibilities. The TMP faculty will provide clinical radiation therapy services for the state-of-the-art external beam, IMRT, VMAT, SRS, IGRT and LDR and HDR brachytherapy programs at VCU and its satellite clinics. The TMP faculty will also have the opportunity to participate in a dynamic clinical, research, and graduate level and clinical physics and radiation oncology residency teaching programs.

Position Responsibilities

1. Clinical

The faculty member will provide clinical radiation therapy physics services as specified above.

2. Teaching

The faculty member is expected to participate in teaching radiological physics courses for radiation oncology residents and teaching in our M.S. and Ph.D. graduate programs.

3. Research

Faculty member is expected to participate in clinically-oriented research and development.

4. Service

Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field (e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.).

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in medical physics, physics, engineering or a closely related discipline

• Clinical training in a CAMPEP accredited residency program

• Clinical physics experience in the state-of-the-art external beam and brachytherapy programs

• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

• Strong personal skills such as initiative, problem-solving, and teamwork

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Experience in 3DCRT, IMRT, IGRT, LDR and HDR brachytherapy and/or SRS

• Experience in regulatory procedures

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with diverse experience such as MRI, molecular imaging, computer programming and software development ABR or equivalent certification in therapeutic medical physics is desired.
