Minimum Qualifications
  • Degree in Special Education.
  • Hold or be eligible to hold a North Carolina Teaching License in Special Education.
  • At least 5 years of successful EC teaching experience.
  • Experience working with Exceptional Children’s programming, including case management, writing IEPs, and special education law.
  • Proficient in Every Child Accountability & Tracking System ( ECATS ).
License/Certification Required

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Appalachian State University Academy at Middle Fork is a UNC -System lab school. It is a partnership between Appalachian State University and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
The mission of the Academy at Middle Fork is to provide a balanced education for children, teachers, principals, and families through the implementation of research-based practices, state-of-the-art literacy instruction, and exemplary classroom instruction and administration. The Academy is a model for professional development and social justice emphasizing sustainable practices in global education and responsible living.

The Exceptional Children’s Coordinator & Interventionist will support EC teachers with effective implementation of instruction using research-based programs and strategies with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes for students with disabilities in both the general curriculum and adapted curriculum settings. This position will oversee, monitor, and be responsible for the overall operation, compliance, and reporting requirements of the Exceptional Children’s program. They will also work with individuals and small groups to provide academic interventions to students in reading and math.

Duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:

Coordination of EC Programming:

  • Provide support and assistance in implementing the special education program and related services (includes AIG ).
  • Collaborate with EC teachers to improve student outcomes by building capacity to integrate best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment.
  • Lead weekly EC PLT meetings.
  • Communicate with the principal about professional development, materials, and equipment needs for EC teachers and special education programming.
  • Assist in developing EC schedules to ensure services are provided to remain in compliance with IEP goals.
  • Coordinate with contracted service providers.
  • Mentor new EC teachers, both beginning teachers and those new to the lab school.


Compliance and Monitoring:

  • Provide support to EC teachers with appropriate development and implementation of quality IEPs, compliance, IEP meetings, and data collection with instructional practices.
  • Assist EC teachers in the preparation of IEP meetings.
  • Conduct student re-evaluation review meetings as needed to determine ongoing eligibility and appropriate student services.
  • Coordinate and track initial referrals for special education, ensuring proper procedures are followed, to determine eligibility for special education.
  • Coordinate and track all special education transfer students, ensuring proper procedures are followed, to determine NC eligibility for special education.
  • Advise the principal on all legal issues related to EC policies, procedures, and services.
  • Maintain all data in the ECATS online reporting system pertinent for state reporting.
  • Working collaboratively with the EC staff, provide annual training to staff on the legally required provision of services in the general education and special education settings.
  • Provide timely reporting of all requested data to DPI .
  • Provide timely submission of all special education grants and budgets.
  • Attend regional and state EC meetings and conferences.


Interventionist:

  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to help identify best practices for individual and small groups of students.
  • Provide high-quality instruction to individual students and small groups.
  • Use data to provide instruction to students to bring their skills to grade level.
  • Use identified research-based interventions focused specifically on individual student needs.
  • Maintain data-based documentation of continuous monitoring of student performance and progress.
  • Provide data to school teams and participate in decisions about student progress.
  • Communicate with teachers, administration, and families regarding student progress.
  • Assist with identifying students for placement in intervention groups.
  • Participate in meetings with teachers, administration, and families to discuss student placement and progress.
  • Provide diagnostic assessments for students as needed.

This position is grant-funded and time-limited based on funding provided by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for Comprehensive School Improvement ( CSI ). The lab school is eligible to continue receiving CSI grant funding as long as the school is identified as a Comprehensive Support & Improvement ( CSI ) School. The position is contingent upon the grant application being submitted to and approved by the NC Department of Public Instruction each year.
