Forest Operations Training Program Manager


Location: Moscow

Pay Range: $53,331 per year or higher depending on education and experience

Position Summary:
This position, working under the supervision of the Director, University of Idaho Experimental Forest (UIEF) will manage the operations of the University of Idaho Student Logging Crew, coordinate professional workforce training programs and workshops, and install stand thinning and harvesting treatments to support operational management, research, teaching and demonstration. The position will plan and deliver forestry equipment operator training and student work experience in safe, efficient ground-based mechanized felling, skidding and processing. The position will work with University of Idaho Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and Associated Logging Contractors (ALC) to ensure that University staff and students are following appropriate safety procedures and providing practical, useful training materials. Additionally, the position will be responsible for managing inspection, maintenance and repairs for a dedicated fleet of high value forestry equipment.


Minimum Qualifications:
• HS Diploma or GED
• 5 years equipment operation experience using modern, mechanized logging equipment, including operation of feller-buncher, skidder and processor.
• Experience in applying logging safety protocols and procedures in a professional work environment.
• Experience with heavy equipment maintenance and minor repair, including, for example, maintaining service records, minor welding, diagnosing mechanical and hydraulic issues, and procuring and replacing damaged parts.


Preferred Qualifications:
• 10 years of work experience with harvesting operations that includes working with private, state, and/or industrial forest landowners in a range of operating conditions and stand treatments.
• Demonstrated professional experience in written and oral communication skills.
• Experience participating in a professional organization, serving as primary point of contact for a business, or other role requiring additional experience with written and oral communication such as public speaking.
• 2 years of experience in a supervisory or oversight role on a logging crew.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
• Must be able to lift, carry, and/or otherwise move 50 pounds.
• Ability to work/hike in steep and rugged terrain in forested environment.
• Ability to work in adverse weather and outdoor climate conditions including periods of smoke associated with prescribed/wildland fire.
• Ability to be seated in heavy equipment for prolonged periods.
