Position Summary 

To provide support for an assigned caseload of up to 60 first-generation, low-income students and/or students with disabilities in the areas of academic advising, coaching, career guidance, financial aid guidance, financial literacy, advocacy, and connection to other college support services. The advisor also maintains the relationship between the FLC Peer Education Center tutors and TRIO students and guides them through the process of requesting a tutor and building successful tutor/tutee relationships.   

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree  
  • One or more years' experience as a tutor  
  • One or more years' experience in an educational setting providing academic advising, financial aid advising, career guidance, counseling, coaching, or related experience in addition to tutoring  
  • Familiarity with MS Office programs such as Word and Outlook  
  • Demonstrated effective written, oral, and intercultural communication skills  
  • Demonstrated effective collaborative and administrative skills  
  • Demonstrated commitment to—and appreciation for—socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and individual differences  

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Prior experience with TRIO programs or other program serving marginalized and underrepresented populations  
  • Familiarity with Banner, Blumen, and WebOPUS programs  
  • Background similar to that of TRIO students: low-income, first-generation college, or having a disability  

 

Major Responsibilities 

  • Provide comprehensive support services for students enrolled in TRIO SSC, including academic, personal, social, and career coaching designed to maximize student persistence and achievement; actively monitor academic progress and provide proactive support and interventions as needed.  
  • Conduct thorough assessments of new participants’ cognitive and non-cognitive skills and personal needs; work with students to develop individualized student success plans based on their needs and goals; help students connect with on- and off-campus resources.  
  • Check in regularly with caseload to help them identify and pursue goals, including helping them build academic, personal, financial, and career skills.  
  • Provide course advisement and assistance with course registration.  
  • Help students file the FAFSA and identify other grant and scholarship opportunities.   
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records in accordance with grant requirements; complete requested reports on services provided.  
  • Plan, prepare and implement program activities/workshops/events.  
  • Assist in participant recruitment.  
  • Serve on committees that make decisions, formulate policies, or design programs that impact TRIO students. Coordinate with FLC administration, faculty, staff and students to foster a climate supportive of low income, first generation students and students with disabilities.   
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.  
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.  
  • Produce and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.  
  • Work requires extensive knowledge of the FLC college catalog and course offerings, academic policies and procedures, financial aid/billing policies and procedures, and is predominantly intellectual and professional in character.  
  • Position must frequently exercise their own discretion and judgement.  
  • Work is highly conceptual and requires a high degree of originality, creativity, and sensitivity to social cues, emotional intelligence and cultural nuance.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Serve as the main point of contact between TRIO SSC and the Peer Education Center (PEC)  
  • Participate in tutor recruitment and training, under the lead of the PEC  
  • Help students request tutors and start the tutor/tutee relationship, including introductions  
  • Help students maintain professional and productive tutoring relationships  
  • Explain to students TRIO’s tutoring expectations, how tutoring works, and how to get the most out of the tutoring relationship   
  • Periodically visit the PEC’s tutors to build strong connections between the two programs  
  • Support TRIO students and staff with the Accudemia program   
  • Enter and track tutor usage date in the Blumen database  
  • Serve on committees that involve the coordination and/or success of FLC’s tutoring efforts  
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Compensation  

Salary is $26,000 to $29,000, plus a comprehensive benefits package.  This is an 8 ½ month position that starts in the latter half of August through April.
