The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a full timeResearch Technologistto work in a laboratory in the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine that focuses on perinatal brain injury and neuroinflammation. Consistent with a translational research program, our goal is to increase understanding of neuroimmunology to identify new therapeutic targets and treatment strategies. The candidate will be able to work on multiple research projects simultaneously, while conducting experiments, collecting/summarizing data, providing proper laboratory/study subject care, maintaining project data, contributing to manuscripts and funding proposals with supervision and interfacing with a diverse collaborative of physicians and scientists.

Specific Duties an Responsibilities:

  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience.
  • Working knowledge of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.
  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include: basic tissue culture, cell separation methods, electrophoretic separations, assays, basic molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biological science techniques, including microscopy and biochemistry. Will utilize in vivo models in experiments and handle rats and mice.
  • Collects data and monitors data quality and accuracy as required by research protocol. Maintains appropriate documentation of research results, as required by research protocol.Recommends revisions to experimental methods based upon observations of the data.
  • Participate in experimental design; plan, implement, evaluate and interpret results
  • Conduct library research; participate in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication
  • Identify problems, troubleshoot, analyze variations observed and reported in regular testing protocols. Modify, refine, adapt techniques/procedures
  • Perform surgeries and care for laboratory animals; perform behavioral testing. Following experimental protocols, collect tissue in accordance with USDA, AALAC and IACUC guidelines
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, verifies orders upon receipt
  • Perform microscopy, flow cytometry and routine cell culture
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance of equipment
  • Prepare, clean, sterilize, and maintain lab equipment, glassware, & instruments
  • Assist with general lab and equipment maintenance
  • Keep daily lab notes, maintain data and inventory spreadsheets
  • Assure laboratory compliance with regulatory requirements and JHU standards, policies/procedures
  • Clean and maintain work areas
  • Use computers and computer-interfaced equipment to perform required duties
  • Analyze experimental data as appropriate
  • Mentor students, teach laboratory techniques and share scientific knowledge
  • Review, edit and maintain updated animal protocols

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, psychology, biology, pharmacology, physiology, chemistry or related STEM field required.

Preferred Qualifications: Some post-undergraduate experience in a comparable laboratory, or a significant independent research project. Undergraduate research experience as part of their training is acceptable experience.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be knowledgeable of skills required in immunoblotting, tissue culture, flow cytometry and microscopy and perform animal work independently.
  • The candidate will perform established laboratory assays with the initial supervision of senior personnel until capable of performing those assays independently.
  • Self-motivated and actively seeking to further develop skills, expertise and knowledge in neuroscience and medicine.

Physical Requirements: Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or laboratory environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
