General summary/purpose

The Center for Child & Community Health Research (CCHR) in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics is a leader in addressing social determinants of health, sexually transmitted infections and other health disparities through research, programmatic and clinical endeavors.

CCHR seeks a Programmer Analyst to provide technical research support. The Programmer Analyst would be responsible for:

  1. Supporting day to day research and programmatic activities as they relate to database development and database management for research projects and programs
  2. Building data collection tools within databases while working with Primary Investigators and identified CCHR staff
  3. Formatting and cleaning databases and datasets as needed, including RedCap, Epic, and large scale national and international datasets
  4. Implementing basic and sometimes complex biostatistical analyses, under the supervision of faculty investigators.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

The responsibilities listed below are typical examples of the work performed by this position. Not all duties assigned to this position are included, nor is it expected that everyone in this position will be assigned every job responsibility.

  • Programmer Analyst is responsible for development, implementation, testing and support of data collection tools and databases, including platforms such as RedCap and ACASI.
  • Responsible for day to day research and programmatic activities as they relate to database development and database management for research projects and programs.
  • Maintain, manage and update databases-provide programming for projects with continued ongoing support.
  • Manage clinical and other types of data sets and conduct data cleaning and formatting to facilitate data export to all statistics packages.
  • Provide support to faculty investigators in all areas of research projects, including data management and cleaning, basic biostatistical analysis, and complex biostatistical analysis.
  • Produce data visualizations as needed.
  • Communicate findings with study team clearly as project progresses, including adaptation of analytical plans, as needed.
  • Provide clear deliverables to study team, including basic tables and complex analytical results.
  • Other duties as needed.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree required. One year of related work experience with computer systems and applications.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits or 18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related discipline
  • Experience with database development, specifically REDCap, ACASI and/or Qualtrics
  • Expertise in GIS software system(s)

  • Good analytical and advanced problem-solving ability to assess, prioritize and solve highly complex clinical and systems problems.
  • High analytical ability to solve complex technical problems.
  • Strong problem identification and resolution skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously and quickly switch between priorities/tasks.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff and adapt to a rapidly changing work environment.
  • Advanced critical thinking skills and ability to apply these skills in various situations.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with a statistical analysis program (STATA, SAS or R preferred)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with faculty investigators as well as other study team members
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
