Full-Time, 9-Month, Exempt, Administrative Staff Appointment

The Department of Music at Colby College invites applications for a combined position of conductor of the Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble, and as an instructor of a wind instrument. The position is a staff appointment, with possibility for renewal. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Conduct the Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble (both comprised of students, professional musicians, and College community)
  • Inspire musicians to deliver strong creative performances
  • Direct weekly evening rehearsals
  • Present a minimum of one concert per ensemble per semester
  • Conduct auditions as necessary
  • Recruit musicians to fill gaps as needed
  • Work in conjunction with the department Chair to administer the College’s yearly music series
  • Teach weekly individual lessons on a wind instrument (compensated on a per-student basis)
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice


QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience; DMA or equivalent professional experience preferred
  • Prior conducting/teaching experience required
  • Effective communication skills with all levels
  • Documented success in conducting. teaching, performing and recruiting
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of students, faculty, and college community in a liberal arts environment
  • Experience organizing, marketing, and executing performances
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements


KEY RELATIONSHIPS :

Duties require that employee interact with students, faculty, staff, and outside constituencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary. Some travel is required as well as some weekend and evening hours based on rehearsals and performances.
