Director of Marketing & Communications - Office of the Dean (ECAS)



The Office of the Dean in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences (ECAS) is seeking applications for the position of Director of Marketing & Communications. This position is responsible for all ECAS (administration, departments, and programs) web sites, and has supervisory authority over the assistant director, multimedia specialist, and the web master. As such, the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences (ECAS) is responsible for assisting the administration, faculty, staff, and/or other personnel with the ECAS’s integrated communication activities via web, print, social media, radio, and television, in order to enhance the prestige and goodwill of the College and to ensure that the needs and reputation of the College are optimized.

In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:

  • In consultation with the Dean of the Eberly College, develop, manage and implement a comprehensive communications plan. The plan must align with the mission and strategic goals of the university and college, and strengthen the understanding of the ECAS’s vision, and goals. Develop print, marketing and public relation proposals for discussion with the Dean.
  • In consultation with the Dean, develop and implement a targeted public relations and marketing plan for the Eberly College. Gather and maintain current information from ECAS departments/programs regarding ECAS faculty and alumni for use as content in ECAS communications materials. In consultation with the Dean, develop procedures that strategically prioritize faculty/college information to ensure press releases are written for only high priority information. On behalf of the Dean, compose various types of high-level communication such as announcements, speeches, presentations, etc.
  • Oversee registration of any ECAS logo, trademark, or other intellectual property. Manage rapid response and crisis communications for the ECAS. Collaborate with the WVU Office of University Relations. Participate in WVU key communicators meetings and activities and report on same.
  • Hire and supervise a staff of professionals and student interns. Evaluate their performance and if necessary, initiates disciplinary action.
  • Oversee and produce a variety of printed communication materials. Subject matter may include recruitment, development, alumni promotional materials, lecture and symposium ads, programs, and invitations. The director is charged with working with ECAS departments/programs to assist with print projects.
  • Ensure each project progresses in accordance with approved deadlines and within budget. Ensure intellectual property items used in ECAS print materials comply with WVU standards.
  • Must have an understanding and knowledge of web site design (including web site architecture, navigation, functionality, graphics) sufficient to effectively manage the ECAS website and keep the ECAS webmaster on task. Oversee that the content of all ECAS websites is accurate, current, and relevant. Routinely coordinate with appropriate departmental web liaisons to obtain updated information for web site content. Write or edit language of web site content to ensure accuracy and compatibility with existing content.
  • Expand and grow the Eberly College presence in online communication channels and to help develop strategic goals for website, blog, and social networking sites. Manage all Eberly College social networking sites through strategic daily postings, management of content and community engagement. Consult with, train, coach and support internal departments and programs to enable them to be effective in social media and achieve their goals. Work with analytics to track and communicate the College’s social media performance


Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with a preference in communications, marketing, integrated marketing communications, public relations or similar field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience:
    • Experience in marketing, communications, and public relations
    • Experience developing a complex strategic communication plan
    • Supervisory experience
  • Applicants who are selected for an interview will be required to provide a portfolio of communication samples.
  • Demonstrated superior skills in media and public relations principles and practices.
  • Superior skills in communications principles and practices for audiences both internal and external to your organization.
  • Superior skills in marketing principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated superior writing and editing skills required, including skills in English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and accepted journalism style.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships across different departments/programs within the ECAS and WVU, and externally.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise others and to assign and review work.
