The Clinical Case Manager will serve as a clinical (confidential) case manager for the Counseling Center to support its mission and serve students. The position plays a vital role in the development of a campus environment where students' mental health is supported and students with mental illness receive the additional support they need to be successful at the institution. The position reports to the Director of the Counseling Center and is also directed by the Associate Director of the Counseling Center. The Clinical Case Manager will work with students engaged in treatment at the Counseling Center to provide (1) Crisis stabilization and support services to students during regular business hours, (2) Coordinate clinical communication and follow-up when established clients are in crisis or are of concern to the treatment team, (3) Engage in intake and on-going individual and group counseling services as needed, (4) Serve as a clinical liaison/representative as needed in Students of Concern (SOC) and the Case Assessment, Review, and Evaluation (CARE) team meetings, and (5) Engage in outreach measures as needed to support the campus community's mental health and mental health awareness.

Duties include the following: assist clients in engaging with resources and in practicing social behaviors (e.g. utilizing public transport); coordinate access to care for both campus and community resources; engage in routine follow up with clients deemed 'at risk' and document accordingly; report concerns about 'at risk' students to supervisors, assigned counselors, and to the assigned medical provider; assist in obtaining medical records from recent psychiatric hospital stays and from treating physicians; serve as liaison to the crisis response team and the local psychiatric emergency facilities; coordinate with parents of students needing acute psychiatric care and/or to withdraw from university; make recommendations regarding on-going care and stabilization of students in crisis; liaison with other departments as assigned; engage with students on decisions that may impact personal and academic success during matriculation and beyond; participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings with clinical staff; consult with other departments as needed on mental health education; participate in search committees and staff hiring as needed; suicidal/ homicidal and other mental health assessment and referral for students/university staff; crisis consultation and crisis support as needed; and work with Student Development and Student Retention services to market and promote mental wellness and health services to prospective and current students and parents/caregivers.

  • Strong skills in the areas of conflict resolution, problem solving techniques, interviewing and crisis stabilization
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess and negotiate complex, highly sensitive situations
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and facilitate resolution of difficult challenges, including the ability to handle complex issues of extreme sensitivity
  • Skill in writing concise, logical, analytical reports to convey complex issues
  • Ability to maintain neutrality and work under stress
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and success in working with diverse constituencies, both domestic and international
  • Strong and effective interpersonal skills; the ability to listen well and demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for individual needs
  • Ability to work as part of a University-wide community to serve individuals with mental illness or mental health challenges
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional and productive working relationships with staff at all levels at the University
  • Working knowledge of FERPA and HIPAA

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree; and one (1) year and/or Graduate Internship/Practicum experience working in a higher education setting, non-profit organization, or K -12 school system as a counselor, social worker, or case manager.

Preferred Qualifications: Two (2) or more years working in a higher education setting, non-profit organization, or K -12 school system as a counselor, social worker, or case manager; demonstrated experience working with individuals who may be in distress and/or handling difficult interactions; demonstrated commitment to working with multicultural populations, and an awareness of issues affecting women, minorities, and persons with disabilities; knowledge, experience, and training in handling issues related to gender-based violence; superior leadership and management skills, including interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills; and excellent presentation and training skills.
