Job Description:

The RNS Engineering Laboratory within the UF Department of Neurosurgery is seeking an experienced Biological Scientist II to perform molecular biology experiments, perform general laboratory management duties and provide animal care.

Responsibilities of this position will include:

Performing experimental work, including, but not limited to:

  • Molecular cloning, flow cytometry, synthesizing RNA constructs, PCR, manufacturing nanoliposomes, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, RNA seq analysis.
  • Analyze data and report data.
  • Adjust/modify experimental designs as necessary based on experimental data analysis.
  • Assist with report writing and developing presentations.



Participating in laboratory management, including, but not limited to:

  • Maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Inventory management and purchasing lab and office supplies.
  • Maintain laboratory safety programs.
  • Participate in writing and editing SOPs (standard operating procedures) for the laboratory.


Animal work, including, but not limited to :

  • Monitoring, care and surgical support (intracranial and subcutaneous tumor implantation in mice).
  • Post-surgical monitoring and care, health evaluation and surveillance, giving injections (intravenous, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, etc), removing sutures, maintaining procedures and protocols, collecting biological samples (blood, tissues, etc.), and maintaining laboratory records.

Expected Salary:

$38,850-$43,900

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • More than five years of molecular biology experience and molecular cloning.
  • Experience in in vitro RNA transcription preferred.
  • Doctoral degree in molecular biology or similar.
  • Experience in flow cytometry, programing and RNA seq analysis.
