Position Summary

The University at Buffalo seeks to hire an Associate Director of the Center for Excellence in Writing ( CEW ). The Associate Director CEW, possessing advanced disciplinary knowledge related to writing and writing instruction, will play a critical role in fostering academic excellence and student success at the undergraduate and graduate level. Reporting to the Director, the Associate Director will provide positive and informed leadership over the day-to-day management of CEW operations at the Center’s two main locations on the North Campus including supervision of student employees serving as writing consultants/tutors and reception staff. The Associate Director is also responsible for staff professional development, marketing, outreach, communications and special projects.

Writing is a complex process and an integral tool in the production and dissemination of knowledge. Our shared purposes could not be accomplished without writing. Therefore, the CEW is committed to supporting writers across all sectors of the UB Community. Our primary role is to provide quality one-to-one consultation services, available to the entire campus community. Our secondary mission is to create special programs (presentations, workshops, retreats, and more) based upon arising needs of various writing communities. Thirdly, we collaborate with other units to enhance writing instruction and development across campus.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities:

Site and Staff Supervision:

  • Hire, supervise, and orient staff including ~35 – 50 undergraduate and graduate student employees who serve as writing consultants/tutors.
  • Create writing consultant/tutoring schedules in the WCOnline system each semester, and monitor the schedule to assure appropriate matches between tutors and student, faculty or staff writers. Make adjustments as necessary based upon consultant schedules and call-outs. Oversee scheduling of tutoring sessions to ensure timely provision of services, smooth traffic, enforcement of appropriate limits, and to ensure appropriate staffing levels to meet demand. Monitor client reports and writer surveys.


Mentoring and Professional development:

  • Monitor quality of consultation services and provide mentoring to consulting staff. Develop and deploy staff professional development workshops and materials in line with research based best practices in the fields of Composition & Rhetoric, Writing Center Theory and Practice, TESOL /Translingualism, or anti-racist writing pedagogy to ensure quality, empowering support to all UB writers.


Outreach, Marketing and Communications:

  • Oversee communications, marketing and outreach operations for the center, liason with Interdivisional Marketing and Communications and UBIT as necessary. Organize outreach to the campus community to build awareness of Center services.


Collaboration and Coordination

  • Coordinate events.
  • Collaborate with other units as necessary.
  • Serve on committees and task forces as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in English, Linguistics or a related field with one-year experience working in a writing center and/or experience teaching writing in a higher education setting with competencies in the following areas:

  • High-level problem solving skills and creative ideas.
  • Knowledge of pedagogical and writing instruction theory.
  • A coherent and positive leadership philosophy.
  • Skill or aptitude with digital technology and multimodal composing.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently utilizing good judgement.
  • Exceptional customer service with the ability to work as part of team committed to serving diverse constituents, ensuring our efforts reflect, support and enhance diversity, equity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD or MA with a Composition and Rhetoric or TESOL emphasis.
  • Research/expertise in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion through writing instruction and/or anti-racist writing assessment and writing pedagogy.
  • Research/expertise in supporting writing development for international or non-Native English speaking students.
  • Experience working in a writing center in a leadership capacity.
  • Experience supervising staff.
