The Assistant Dean of Academic Advising and Support is part of a leadership team in the Office for Undergraduate Education. This group is responsible for supporting student academic success and partnering with faculty to offer academic programs and services. The Office for Undergraduate Education supports and advises the Dean of Emory College of Arts and Sciences on issues related to undergraduate education.Emory College of Arts and Sciences has about 5600 students, and is one of four undergraduate schools in Emory University.

 

Emory College of Arts and Sciences is currently moving from a system of primarily faculty advisors, to a mixed system of staff and faculty advisors.  Staff advisors in OUE are assigned to new students, and remain with the same students through four years.  Faculty are the advisors of record for students in their majors and minors.  In addition, there are specialized advisors in Pre-Health Advising associated with the advising group.  There are specialized advisors for study abroad and national scholarships and fellowships who are not part of the advising group, but collaborate when appropriate.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Overseeing programs providing academic advising and support to undergraduate students in Emory College of Arts and Sciences
  • Working with students and faculty on issues affecting students’ academic performance, and serving as a College liaison to other University offices, including the Department of Accessibility Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and Student Case Management and Intervention Services
  • Work with their partner Dean to implement and develop new advising system
  • Receive referrals from advisors of difficult cases when those cases require the involvement of a Dean
  • Oversee staff providing academic support and advising, the team working on progress and graduation, the office of Pre-Health Advising
  • Support programs that include peer tutoring,academic coaching, supplemental instruction programs (in concert with departments), and learning specialists who work with students on probation and with other special needs
  • Work with the academic support group to identify students on probation and those excluded for a semester or more, and to notify these students of their status  
  • Work with the whole advising and support group to design and carry out proactive advising with students who are struggling

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • PhD or a comparable terminal degree 
  • At least 3 years of administrative experience in a university setting, preferably in an academic affairs office
  • Experience supervising and mentoring staff   

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Candidates must have an interest and record of supporting and mentoring students, and experience supporting student success
  • Effective working in a team to achieve academic goals
  • Effective working with students, faculty and parents
  • Familiarity with national conversations about academic support and advising 
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills 

 

Applications from current faculty in Emory College of Arts and Sciences are welcome.  Faculty applicants should have administrative experience in their department or program, and demonstrate an interest in and commitment to student success, experience in College-level committees, organizations, the Faculty Senate, or working groups.
