Description:

The Marine Genomics Laboratory (MGL) at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team of researchers as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Fisheries and Aquaculture Genetics. The candidate is expected to work independently and will be in charge of a recently funded project to use Close-Kin Mark Recapture (CKMR) to estimate the census size of red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, off the U.S. Atlantic seaboard. The project involves designing and optimizing Genotyping-by-Thousands (GT-seq) panels, deploying these panels to mass-genotype red snapper, preparing ddRAD libraries, and testing and optimizing CKMR strategies for marine fishes with large population sizes. The candidate will lead a team that includes two laboratory technicians and will interface with collaborating scientists at University of Florida and NOAA. This is a salaried two-year position, offered with full benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate ddRAD-seq DNA libraries.
  • Prepare and analyze GT-seq data
  • Bioinformatic processing of next-generation sequencing data and genetic association analysis.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publications in peer-reviewed, scientific journals.
  • Keep current with appropriate literature.
  • Participate in writing proposals to funding sources.
  • Attend scientific meetings to disseminate research results.
  • Communicate and coordinate with collaborators.
  • Conduct final CKMR analysis.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in Biological Sciences or related by date of hire.
  • Relevant publication record.
  • Experience with management of large data sets.
  • Strong statistical and computational background.
  • Familiarity with appropriate molecular biology techniques.
  • Intermediate MS Office skills.
  • Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to perform statistical analyses, present data and perform other computer related tasks.
  • Ability to work with nucleic acids and analyze molecular data.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with preparation of next-generation sequencing libraries.
  • Experience with GT-seq.
  • Experience with standard bioinformatics software, Unix/Linux, and R and other programming.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (primarily Word and Excel).
