Job Description

The Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor in Industrial Design beginning in Fall 2021 or Spring 2022. Ideal candidates will have the capacity to teach design visualization or other core professional skills; problem solving and integration; ethical and sustainable design practices; and a breadth of topics valuable in an industrial design laboratory course that contribute to the broader conversation of inclusion and equity across international boundaries.

The School is especially eager to attract diverse faculty with a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

As an Assistant/Associate Professor, this tenure track position will require a commitment to teaching, service, and research that develops the school, college, and university expectations and strategic growth areas. Programmatic goals include a focus on sustainability, humanity, and well considered technology. In this search we seek to diversify perspectives on the products, systems, and services that will define our global future and environment.

Applicants must specifically address the ongoing opening up of the definition of industrial design away from a focus purely on the production of objects and towards an understanding of the manner in which its knowledge and skills can contribute to a more sustainable, equitable, and beautiful human-made environment. In particular, faculty needs to expand the program’s ability to embed industrial design both in a wider material and visual culture and to understand the diverse social communities it serves. Successful candidates will have clear positions on the developing nature of design, the way in which we educate designers, and how to professionally manifest compassionate, humble, and effective designs.

The integration of the candidate's work with the School’s experimental tradition in design, cross-disciplinary, and hands-on teaching is essential. This position will require the capacity to work in diverse teaching environments and across domains of design. Faculty on this track will have the opportunity to shape research initiatives that expand the Industrial Design program, influence the profession and university through service, and develop high impact design practices in the classroom that empower the next generation of designers.
