GENERAL SUMMARY
Our laboratory focuses on the development of novel immune-based therapies for pediatric cancers.Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
-
Oversees laboratory operations,
including but not limited to: ordering and stocking supplies,
ensuring laboratory safety, maintaining data and inventory
spreadsheets, training new employees, updating protocols,
researching and implementing new technologies, maintaining clean
laboratory;
Manages inventory of biological
specimens entering the
laboratory;
Oversees and assures laboratory
compliance with regulatory requirements and JHU standards,
policies, procedures;
Participates in developing
experimental designs; Plans/implements experiments; Evaluates and
interprets results;
Compiles, analyzes, interprets
research data using various computer software applications;
Conducts library research, participates in editing and preparing
manuscripts, scientific illustrations, computer graphics for
publication;
- Processes specimens as described in ongoing clinical trials;
Requirements:
Education:
- BS/BA in Biology, Molecular Biology, or similar discipline
Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques in a comparable setting;
- Advanced degree may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula;
Skills:

Must be knowledgeable in
RNA/DNA/Protein isolation, PCR, qPCR, ELISA, SDS-PAGE,
immunoblotting, tissue culture, electrophoresis, animal
work
Should be able to design
controlled experiments
independently.
Should
be familiar with theory behind experiments and able to apply
analytical skills to interpret
results
Responsible for
oversight/training of students and new lab
members
Able to perform established
laboratory assays with initial supervision of senior personnel
until capable of performing assays
independently

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
