The Department of Neurology, Bayview Headache Center seeks aSr. Nurse Practitionerto work under the direction, supervision and responsibility of a physician, and in accordance with established policies, evaluate patient's health status through diagnostic procedures and tests. Provide therapeutic patient care under direction of a physician and in accordance with established protocols. A licensed, credentialed nurse practitioner provides diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and follow-up to patients referred for the Headache Center in the Department of Neurology. Works closely with physicians, dieticians, and staff in caring for patients with headaches.

The Sr. Nurse Practitioner (NP) works interdependently in collaboration with one or more physicians in the practice and provides age and specialty appropriate medical care at the achieved level of training. By improving and expanding existing services and protocols, the nurse practitioner strives to increase the efficiency of the clinical and research Headache Epilepsy Center. In collaboration with members of the research team, the nurse practitioner creates and maintains protocols to improve care for patients and families as appropriate.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The NP will be a critical team member who will support decision making for patients referred for headache to include patients requesting second opinions as appropriate, interfacing with Johns Hopkins International and Johns Hopkins USA as needed. This also involves assembling prior studies and providing some logistical, educational, and emotional support to families.

    Attends weekly Headache Center meetings. Includes seeing return patients in clinic and basic management for urgent phone calls, medication questions, performing procedures for headaches such as nerve blocks and Botox which may be done on inpatients. Provide care for patients with various types of headaches. Assumes additional responsibility for patients with established diagnoses with oversight from physician. Assist in the preparation/quality control of all correspondence derived from clinic, scheduling, clinic notes, correspondence with families, correspondence with referring physicians. Field phone, mail Epic in basket messages and queries from families, physicians. Interface with clinically oriented research initiatives. Participate in fellow/resident teaching.

The NP will assist in onboarding and education of new headache NP’s. The NP works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team and is responsible for providing comprehensive and age appropriate care. The NP practices within the guidelines of the unit department and institution and in accordance with the NP Physician Written Agreement required and approved by the State of Maryland.

    Provides comprehensive, age appropriate and episodic care to patients as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team. Performs history and physical exams. Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings in the history and physical. Identify the differential diagnosis.Assess severity of patient’s illness and establish a plan for patient evaluation. Establish a plan of care specific to the patient and age of the patient served. Order appropriate laboratory and imaging studies. Perform tests and procedures as indicated. Establish a plan of care related to the patient’s identified problems including medications, diet, therapeutic procedures, etc. Consults with other health team members regarding proposed treatment guidelines as necessary. Prescribes and regulates medications and formulas and performs other related procedures per NP Physician written agreement. Establishes priorities in patient’s care and management. Records patient visit/interaction in concise, clear and timely manner in the electronic patient records. Evaluates effectiveness of plan and need for referral and/or follow-up. Evaluates effectiveness of previously implemented medical treatment. Evaluates need for follow-up. Arranges referrals when indicated. Assumes responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff, and departmental needs. Communicates with health care team members to assure patient and organizational needs are met. Acts as an educational and clinical resource to patients and families. Continually assesses the learning needs of patients and families. Implements the teaching plan in a timely manner, using effective teaching methods. Evaluates the teaching plan, modifying as necessary. Participates in research activities in the role of Study Coordinator when appropriate. Works in collaboration with the principal investigator and co-development of research protocols. Implements protocols per organizational/IRB rules. Collects, analyzes, and presents research data. Documents data collection per organizational, State and Federal regulations.

Inpatient Consultation Services: May be requested to perform a headache procedure on an inpatient.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities Research:

  • Coordinate flow of patients into ongoing research studies. Basic data collection for studies.
  • Inform, recruit and enroll patients in research studies; via discussions and approved advertisements.
  • Assist with IRB submissions; Facilitate database and registry data collection (family, medical, prenatal history).
  • Use data collection tools and questionnaires in clinic; Use secure, private websites.
  • Verify phenotypic characteristics observed during research visits. Obtain biological samples (saliva, blood, tissue). Dissemination of scientific discoveries in professional meetings and publications.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Requires minimum of 3 years’ experience in related clinical area, and obtained proficiency in area of specialty. Prefer at least 5 years’ experience. Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization may substitute for some experience. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the BMC credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications: Proficient in use of EPIC system

Physical Requirments:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
