Position Summary:

The undergraduate and graduate programs offered by the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Art Department are among the preeminent programs in the United States. The Department is known nationwide for its rigor, dedicated faculty, and accomplished students and alumni. The Book Art position will involve teaching multi-level classes in book arts, letterpress, papermaking and printmaking. Candidates must have an excellent working knowledge of hand book binding, letterpress, hand papermaking and relevant contemporary critical issues.

The successful candidate should be a practicing artist who will contribute to the intellectual and academic life of the department through Research, Teaching and Service within a vibrant art department of 29 faculty members. The position offers the opportunity to work with the Kohler Art Library artist's book collection. The teaching load is three classes per semester and service on MFA committees. The desire and ability to interface with all areas of the Art Department is a significant facet of the position. The successful candidate must meet the teaching, research, and service expectations of the department and university.

Principal Duties:

Principal duties include a demonstrated proficiency in multiple area of expertise such as digital print technologies (for example laser cutter, 3D printed type, CNC router, polymer plate making, digital drawing), hand book binding, letterpress, hand papermaking and printmaking. Consideration will be given to candidates who have a background in digital print practices, and the ability to teach across Printmaking disciplines. The successful candidate will:
-Build and maintain a studio practice at a nationally recognized level.
-Provide leadership, mentoring, and guidance to students.
-Teach undergraduate and graduate students (Non-Majors, Certificate, Majors: BA, BFA, MA, and MFA).
-Serve on graduate committees with MA and MFA candidates.
-Work collegially in a three-person Printmaking area within a large vibrant Art Department.
-Participate in service activities at the local, state, and national level as well as the University.
-Maintain an active studio practice of nationally recognized quality, at a level that will meet tenure expectations at a research institution.
-Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in a wide range/variety of Book Art, Papermaking & Printmaking art practices as well as working with graduate students from across the Department and serving on MA and MFA graduate committees.
-Have the opportunity to teach special topics classes to graduate and undergraduate students.
-Engage in service activities at the university, local, state, and national level.
-Meet the teaching, research, and service expectations of the department and university.
-Demonstrate an active commitment to the continued growth and development of the undergraduate and graduate program and community.
-Advise and mentor graduate students within an interdisciplinary Art Department.
-Have a strong commitment to using a combination of historic and new technologies within the practice of Book Arts, Papermaking & Printmaking.
-Oversee the Book Art and Papermill studio laboratories and serve and part of a highly ranked printmaking area within the art department.
-Facilitate new course offerings in artist books, letterpress and papermaking that combine multiple technologies and work across printmaking disciplines.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Book Art, Papermaking & Printmaking. Candidate must hold an MFA degree in Art with a specialization in Book Arts, or Papermaking or equivalent relevant experience in the field.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks candidates with distinguished exhibition and professional achievements. The ability to engage with a multi-disciplinary Art Department is a significant aspect of the position. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching, a comprehensive understanding of historical and contemporary art theory and practice excellence in research and productivity in the field. A minimum of two years' college level teaching is preferred but not required.
