Position Details

The Office of University Advancement builds lifelong relationships with alumni, parents, and friends, and engages them in support of Wesleyan’s educational mission and financial goals.

The Advancement team fosters pride in the Wesleyan community and develops support for university initiatives through outreach activities, including development/fundraising; alumni & parent relations and both on and off-campus events.

Reporting to the Director of Principal Gifts, the Senior Associate Director of International Advancement coordinates international engagement, fundraising, and donor relations for the university.

The Senior Associate Director is responsible for developing a strategic framework for the discovery and engagement of alumni and parents in key international markets.

Responsibilities include:

Broadening and strengthening engagement of international alumni, parents and other constituents through outreach, personal visits, and partnerships with focused efforts on advancing international agenda goals and increased fundraising results.

Working directly and in collaboration with an internal team to develop a multi-year growth plan for the University’s global alumni connections and development efforts. Focusing specific attention on China and India while employing an approach that marries alumni and parent engagement with strategic results-driven donor identification and solicitation.

Leading the India Task Force team and participating as a member of the China Initiative team. Teams comprised of members of University Communications, Admissions and Academic Affairs.

Collaborating with key university administrators on the fundraising process from cultivation through stewardship; working on the preparation of briefing materials and steps to meet interests of the funders; providing advice, counsel, and support.

Tracking and reporting progress on implementation plans, making changes and adjustments based on analysis and staying abreast of the dynamic global environment and data.

Effectively resolving and navigating potential issues.

Providing strategic vision for identifying, soliciting and cultivating philanthropic funding.

Serving as an expert on international fundraising topics.

Operating in close partnership with an internal team on strategy, programs, and coordinated goals.

Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of progressively responsible experience in advancement, fundraising, alumni/donor relations, marketing or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Development experience and understanding of the donor cycle.

Knowledge of Asian Marketplace.

Effective communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.

Must have a valid driver’s license and valid passport.


Preferred Qualifications

Prior Higher Education experience in International Fundraising.

Demonstrated success in major gift fundraising from donors outside of the U.S.

Working knowledge of tax laws affecting international charitable giving.
