Department Summary
The Philosophy Department, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, has 13 faculty positions, 1 administrative position, and 1.0 classified staff positions. The Department offers courses to all University of Oregon students and has degree programs for the B.A., B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. levels. It is the only program in the state to offer a Ph.D. in Philosophy. Faculty members are active in research and writing in addition to teaching. The Department offers an average of 65 courses each year with enrollment ranging from 25 to 500 students. The Department has approximately 200-225 undergraduate majors and 40-50 graduate majors enrolled in its programs. Most of the undergraduate courses draw students from other disciplines who use the credits to satisfy University requirements for Arts and Letters and Social Sciences.

Position Summary
The Undergraduate and Graduate Coordinator reports to the Department Manager and works directly with Philosophy graduate and undergraduate students and faculty. The position provides administrative support to the Graduate and Undergraduate Programs. Support includes communicating with prospective and current students, entering data into multiple systems (e.g., Banner and Gradweb), preparing documents, and tracking student progress. This position is also responsible for working with the other UO departments each term to develop class and room schedules, coordinate graduation lists, etc.

Other essential duties include updating and maintaining the Philosophy website, coordinating events (including commencements), and assisting with multiple administrative tasks, such as: serving as a receptionist, ordering keys, purchasing, and scheduling department maintenance.

Minimum Requirements
  • Two years of general clerical experience. One year of which included typing, word processing, or other experience generating documents;
    OR
  • An Associate's degree in Office Occupations or Office Technology;
    OR
  • Graduation from a private school of business with a Certificate in Office Occupations or Office Technology and one year of general clerical experience.

    College courses in Office Occupations or Office Technology will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Experience using databases such as Banner, GradWeb, and Cognos.
  • Website and social media experience.
  • Event management experience.
  • Desire to learn and further develop new and/or existing skills and abilities.
