The Counselor provides counseling to students and consultation to faculty, students, staff and the community through individual, couples, family, group and crisis counseling /interventions for the benefits of the campus community. The position will assess individuals at risk for self-harm, harm to others, and risk to the campus community. The Counselor collaborates with the counseling center staff, provides consultation to faculty/staff from outside departments, and conducts research and mental health education to the campus community. Additionally, the position will provide consultation services to families in the Admissions office programs. The position may provide mediation services for students when deemed necessary. The Counselor must keep appropriate licensures, certifications, and continuing education to maintain a knowledge base of best practices in the field. The position may provide supervision to student interns as designated by the Center director. If this position provides supervision to post-master’s degree clinicians, the individual must be in compliance with the supervision licensure laws designed by the state of Tennessee. Duties include:

Clinical Responsibilities

Provides individual and group therapy to diverse student population; provides consultation, psychoeducational programming, and outreach to the campus community; documents clinical encounters in the Electronic Health Record system; supervises trainees and junior clinicians; and responds to crisis concerns.

Administrative Responsibilities

Attends weekly staff meetings and case consult meetings; participates in committee assignments as needed; collaborates with other professionals to ensure continuity of client care; and engages in professional development activities to remain apprised of best practices and emerging trends.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Knowledge of best practices and evidence-based treatments for college students
  • Knowledge of multicultural concerns that impact students' mental health
  • Skills at providing evidence-based treatments, consultation, outreach, educational programs, and crisis intervention
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Knowledge of ethical and legal standards regarding collegiate mental health


This position is a Flex-Year Appointment with work schedule of greater than 9 months, but less than 12 months annually.

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy or related mental health field; two years’ professional (post-degree) experience in a clinical setting; experience working with diverse populations; experience treating a wide range of diagnoses and severity levels; experience with crisis intervention; and eligible for TN license in respective mental health field

Preferred Qualifications: Doctoral degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or related mental health field; experience treating substance and alcohol use disorders; clinical experience in a university or college counseling center; five or more years’ experience working as a licensed professional; experience providing clinical supervision; experience with electronic health record systems; and ability to provide therapy in more than one language.
