Executive Director - Environmental Health & Safety

The Division of Auxiliary & Business Services at West Virginia University is seeking applications for the position of Executive Director of Environmental Health & Safety. This dynamic position is responsible for the development, implementation, administration, facilitation, and monitoring of environmental, health, safety, and preparedness policies and programs for the entire University, which includes the main campus in Morgantown, the Health Sciences Center, and all regional campus locations, including our farms and any other areas being operated by the University. This position works collaboratively with academic administrators, faculty and staff to support academic and research excellence while developing and sustaining a culture of safety in compliance with regulatory agencies. This position reports directly to the Associate Vice President of Facilities & Services.

In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:

• Administer programs, policies and procedures that identify, evaluate, and eliminate environmental, health and safety hazards in a proactive manner while minimizing the potential for loss of people, capital, and facilities.
• Direct department resources to support a culture of safety, mitigate risks, and serve the critical safety interests of the University. In partnership with University administrators and their departments, develop a customer-focused service environment.
• Direct and support a high-impact and metric-based environmental health and safety program and ensures that it is communicated, embraced, and enforced.
• Develop and maintain active partnerships with academic and administrative departments across the University system to ensure that the Institution’s safety and regulatory compliance requirements are met.
• Ensure access to environmental health and safety resources, timely consultative assistance, management of hazardous substances, and facilitation of prevention efforts.
• Serve as the University's responsible official and primary interface with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
• Identify, evaluate, and analyze risks inherent in the operation of the University. Monitor the university’s operations to provide early and accurate identification of rising levels of risk and, in conjunction with management, ensure that prompt action is taken where needed to minimize loss.

Qualifications :

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Management, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Business Management or an equivalent degree.
• Master’s degree in Environmental Management, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Business Management or an equivalent degree is preferred.
• At least eight (8) years of experience managing an extensive environmental health and safety program impacting multiple units such as a campus-wide program.
• Experience in a leadership and management role overseeing diverse, technical personnel.​​​

• Valid Driver’s License
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety & Health Manager (CSHM) preferred
• Working knowledge of applicable safety and environmental health laws and regulations as imposed by OSHA, EPA, NFPA and other agencies as required, and skill in performing inspections and ensuring compliance with same.
• Experience working in an academic setting or complex multisite operation.
• Ability to communicate in English including the ability to speak in public.
• Ability to present effective oral and written communication with both internal and external contacts and customers.
• Ability to research, write and prepare reports and program evaluations as necessary.
• Ability to develop, implement, enforce, and evaluate safety and environmental health programs and protocols.
• Ability to develop and manage the Environmental Health and Safety budget.
• Ability to develop and implement training programs, procedures and documentation of same to meet regulatory agency requirements for faculty, staff and students.
• Working knowledge of Life Safety codes and best practices.
• Ability to foster a cooperative work environmental and work proactively with faculty, students, staff, administrative officers and representatives of local community at large, as well as with representatives of governmental agencies as required.
• Strong organizational skills.
