Job Summary
The Department of Biology, Drexel University in Philadelphia,
anticipates hiring a full-time Teaching Faculty position at the
Assistant Professor level to teach undergraduate courses in
biological sciences for the 2021-22 Academic Year. We are seeking
an instructor with expertise in teaching in the following
disciplines: Cell/Mol Biology, Microbiology or Genomics. The
faculty position is expected to have primary responsibility in
delivering our SEA-PHAGES and SEA-GENES lab sequences. The Phage
Hunters Advancing Genomic and Evolutionary Science (PHAGES) project
and the Gene-function Exploration by a Network of Emerging
Scientists (GENES) project are national collaborative research
projects supported by the Science Education Alliance division of
the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). In addition, the
position is expected to develop both introductory and upper-level
courses in their area of expertise. Assigned courses could include
both lecture and lab offerings. Other courses at the introductory
level, as well as upper-level courses in their area of expertise
are expected to be developed for STEM majors. Supervision and
training of graduate teaching fellows or staff assigned to courses
is required. In addition, successful applicants will be expected to
be active in-service activities within the department and/or
college.
The position will have teaching responsibilities at the main campus
in University City, Philadelphia, PA. Candidates with prior
experience with SEA-PHAGES or SEA-GENES will be given higher
consideration.
Essential Functions:
- Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses.
- Implement a year-long course-based research sequence (SEA-PHAGES) to beginning undergraduate students and its sequel mid-level laboratory course (SEA-GENES)
- Annual participation in SEA-PHAGES wide program timelines, events, project goals, student assessment and publication of research findings as outlined by the SEA-PHAGES membership requirements.
- Service to the Department and College
- Other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
PhD or Doctorate, PhD in Biological Sciences or related discipline. Minimum of 1 year of teaching experience
Other Requirements:
Good communication skills and ability to collaborate with others in the development and implementation of innovative, experiential teaching practices.
Physical Demands
Typically sitting at a desk/table, standing, walking.
