The Dean is the academic and administrative leader for the division which includes the areas of Health Sciences, Dental Assisting, Certified Nursing Assistant, LPN to RN, Associate Degree Nursing, Physical Therapy Assistant, Radiography Technician (including specialty programs), Surgical Technician, Sterile Processing, Medical Billing & Coding, Cardiac Technician and Medical Assisting. The position is responsible for the development, delivery and outcome of programs, while encouraging and providing mentoring, innovation and collaboration with faculty and other college departments.
Major responsibilities include the oversight of daily operations, supervision of personnel, facilities, budgets in assigned instructional areas, course and program evaluations/assessments. Serves as the primary contact with state licensing commissions and accrediting bodies. Day-to-day professional activities align with division/department goals and meet performance standards in all of the division’s areas, with a special focus on maintaining high student success levels, program completion rates, national exam scores, and gainful employment.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
· Provide leadership in the development, evaluation and revision of academic programs including the following: researching, identifying, and implementing new programs and courses in collaboration with faculty and staff, and routinely reviewing programs to ensure they are current, effective, produce successful graduates, and align with the mission of the college and employer needs.
· Schedule and manage course offerings with innovative /student centered scheduling to meet student needs and allow students to achieve their academic goals in a timely fashion.
· Work collaboratively with workforce development, Michigan Works, and community partners to develop health courses and customized health trainings, as needed by employers within the community.
· Lead and encourage innovation in the development of divisional objectives, initiatives, and instructional methods and formats. Lead and encourage continuous divisional quality improvement across all delivery modes.
· Ensure the effective use of industry standard technology in learning and teaching.
· Utilize analytics to make data driven decisions for the division and individual programs.
· Provide leadership in developing and implementing student success and retention initiatives. Develop and support the division’s enrollment goals and be accountable for achieving them.
· Seek out, implement, and maintain beneficial articulation agreements with four-year colleges and K-12 schools in consultation with the Executive Vice President for Instruction and Student Affairs and the Executive Vice President of Student & Academic Service.
· Review and approve department budgets based on college strategic goals and program goals that are mutually acceptable and strategically aligned. Adhere to college purchasing and accounting processes. Align and prioritize division resources with the strategic objectives of the college.
· Build and maintain partnerships among faculty, staff, administration, and the community, including business, industry, four-year colleges and universities, K-12 schools and clinical partners.
· Research and recommend appropriate grants to support program development, equipment, space, etc.
· Recruit, select, evaluate, and develop faculty (full-time, part-time, department chairs) and staff in support of division mission and goals. Seek out opportunities to recruit, hire and retain a diverse faculty group.
· Assist in the creation and support of college policies/procedures; advise the Executive Vice President for Instruction and Student Affairs regarding any divisional concerns about college policies and procedure.
· Participate in administrative meetings, retreats, activities, events, and planning as appropriate. Participate in appropriate committees, task forces, or other groups to advance college goals. Communicate college news and information to departments in a timely and effective manner.
· Ensure that active and qualified advisory boards exist to assess programs, to determine employer needs and program equipment needs,
· Validate transfer criteria of course and program offerings to other colleges and universities.
· Promote, provide, and support faculty and staff professional development as it aligns with the divisional and strategic plan.
· Ensure compliance with state, regional, and specialized accreditation standards;
· Following college policies and procedures, conduct disciplinary investigations of student and faculty misconduct and take appropriate action.
· Conduct research, gather, and interpret data and prepare reports for the division in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research.
· Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Master’s degree in Nursing or other healthcare role. Current licensure, credentialing in area of clinical practice and in good standing.
· College teaching experience and healthcare administration or academic administrative or management experience.
· A high-level of professionalism, innovation, collaboration, and institutional commitment in all actions.
· Analytical/administrative abilities sufficient to develop and administer budgets for division cost centers and major grants.
· Interpersonal skills sufficient for effective frequent contact with faculty, staff, students, and community/industry representatives.
· Management abilities sufficient to be successful with the administrative duties associated with a large diverse curriculum.
· Ability to provide rapid response: Disseminate information, complete and submit materials, return phone calls and emails in a timely manner to both internal colleagues and external constituents.
· Solid knowledge of HIPAA and FERPA law, as well as ability to practice ethically and maintain strict confidentiality when needed.

Washtenaw Community College was established in 1965, when Washtenaw County voters passed a millage to provide financial support for a countywide community college. WCC opened with a 6-member Board of Trustees, a newly-appointed president, and a parcel of land in Ann Arbor and Superior Townships. Classes started in September 1966 on a temporary campus at Willow Run, with 1200 students enrolled in 30 occupational programs and a transfer curriculum.
