Job Description
The Private Lands Assistant Engineer (PLAE) will work cooperatively with the Private Lands Engineer-Biologist (PLEB) to design, implement, and monitor conservation projects related to stream and waterway engineering and habitat construction on private properties in southwest Virginia.
The PLAE will be involved with all aspects of project design and management in consultation with the land owner, NRCS officials, and other project team members. They will be part of a larger effort to improve stream habitat conditions for eastern hellbender and other wildlife and fish species of conservation interest.
PLAEs will be expected to work independently to design and prepare projects for approval with guidance from the PLEB. They will be expected to work effectively with many different stakeholders, from land owners to NRCS biologists and engineering staff, during the course of a project.

Required Qualifications
Ability to perform field work in difficult terrain and inclement weather. Demonstrated technical proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3d and AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and Microsoft Excel. Demonstrated experience in topographic surveying techniques, including the use of level and grade rod, total station, and GPS/GNSS equipment. Advanced degree in in environmental science or engineering related curriculum, or a BS degree with an exceptional amount of experience in related soil and water conservation practices.
Preferred Qualifications
Stream Restoration certification, equivalent to Wildland Hydrology Level III course. Virginia Professional Engineering license or the ability to obtain this license within a three-year term.

Additional Information
This position is eligible for telework but would need to be within driving distance to field sites located in the southwest part of Virginia west of Blacksburg. In addition, there may be occasional travel to field stations located near Abingdon, VA.
The successful Candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
