Job Description

A Wildlife Biologist position (Research Associate) is available with the Virginia Tech Conservation Management Institute. The position will be located at Marine Corps BaseQuantico near Stafford Virginia. The initial appointment is a restricted 12month position but may be renewed contingent upon available funds. |Collects, compiles and analyzes biological data to determine occurrence, distribution, and habitat needs for a broad array of species including rare, threatened, and endangered (RTE) species, fish, game and furbearer species, and nongame species. Identifies the need for and recommends habitat improvement projects; studies and recommends solutions to special coordination problems involving animal damage control problems, wildlife habitat protection, and RTE species protection. Develop and apply scientifically appropriate experimental and sample designs and data collection methods for a variety of ecological research projects. Complete assignments with minimal oversight and work cooperatively with other employees to ensure quality is maintained. Effectively communicate sample design and data collection methods through both written and verbal communication. Work alone or with others to write professional project reports. Perform database and statistical analysis to summarize data. Some analyses will require advanced knowledge of database techniques and GIS manipulations. Accurately interpret and report results from statistical analyses. Conduct operations of Quantico Game Check Station which includes interacting with general public and collecting biological information from harvested animals.

Required Qualifications

A M.S. in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Sciences, Forestry, Environmental Science or related field or B.S. and significant post degree demonstrated professional research experience. Experience navigating over rough terrain using topographic maps, GPS and compass and must be willing to work in adverse weather and field conditions. Demonstrated expertise in basic ecological and wildlife survey protocols is required. Demonstrated ability to perform basic statistical analysis of field data and report findings of research through written and oral communication.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with geographic information systems. Experience using agricultural equipment to create and maintain wildlife habitat.
