THE UNIVERSITY: California State University, East Bay (Cal State East Bay) is a comprehensive university serving the San Francisco Bay Area/Silicon Valley. THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Public Health (formerly the Department of Health Sciences) is one of the largest and fastest growing departments at Cal State East Bay, with 14 tenure-track faculty and approximately 1,000 undergraduate students. The department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences which is designed to prepare students to enter into careers in public health or post-graduate professional programs. Undergraduate curriculum in the department emphasizes problem-based learning, teamwork, and strong critical thinking skills, rooted in a population perspective. The Department is currently seeking approval of a Bachelor of Science in Public Health that would be available in Fall 2022 and will be seeking Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation.

The Department has a strong commitment, embodied in its mission and values, to focus on many of the issues facing our society today: the climate crisis, racial inequity, and the importance of public health to effective democratic governance. We are committed to improving the health of our communities and tackling these intersectional problems through teaching, research and service.

We have a strong interdisciplinary group of hard-working faculty with expertise in a number of areas. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Candidates should be able to demonstrate ability to teach one or more core courses in the department as well as required and elective courses. The Department employs a curriculum based on problem-based learning; the Department seeks innovative and enthusiastic candidates to help build on this pedagogical foundation. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses.

The successful applicant must articulate a clear research vision appropriate to their discipline, and demonstrate potential to contribute to an active program of research, scholarly, or creative activities, including evidence of productivity which reflects a coherent agenda.

The candidate would also work with Department faculty as we seek accreditation of the degree in public health.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester, 2022.

QUALIFICATIONS: The Department of Public Health seeks candidates who are aligned with its mission and vision.

Required Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DrPH, ScD) in public health or related discipline acquired no later than the effective date of the appointment
  • Well-articulated research agenda demonstrating evidence of research productivity
  • Scholarship in public health/population health focused on at least one of the following areas: infectious disease, environmental health, health economics, climate change and human health, public health law/policy, public health surveillance, or the elimination of health disparities
  • Demonstrated teaching experience at the University level or promise in this area
  • Demonstrated awareness, sensitivity and experience of the needs of underrepresented student populations through training, research, teaching, or advising
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Established research agenda focused on health equity, social justice, or climate change
  • Specialized training or work experience in quantitative data analysis
  • Demonstrated track record of or potential for securing extramural research funding
  • Experienced in course design, curriculum development, blended learning, problem-based learning case-based instruction, and an ability to use technology as a teaching and learning tool
  • Experienced working with, mentoring and advising diverse group of undergraduate students
  • Demonstrated service activities that enhance community well-being through participation in local, state or national organizations
