Position Summary:

The Broadcast Engineer supports the technical needs of producers, media creation staff, and event coordinators in the creation and presentation of content for statewide audiences. Responsible for installation, operation and maintenance of broadcast and media production hardware and software. Performs technical quality control evaluations to assure compliance with FCC, PBS, and PBS Wisconsin technical standards. The Engineer assists with the design and planning for studio and remote productions; provides hands-on operation of broadcast and production equipment; maintains, designs and documents technical systems; and supports the post-production process using video and audio software and hardware. This position is part of an Engineering team that is cross-trained and also leverages specialized skill sets depending on the individual as well as the specific needs of the station. Reports to the Engineering Supervisor.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree or technical certification in Broadcast Engineering, Electronic Technology or related field preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

1. Hands-on technical experience with professional video and/or audio production.
2. Experience working with audio and/or video delivery for professional broadcast, live-streaming or similar distribution systems.
3. Ability to diagnose technical problems & trace signal paths related to audio, video or data.
4. Ability to work with electronic equipment for extended periods.
5. Experience in professional live production environments that depend on tight deadlines & content delivery to audiences.
6. Experience in design, installation and/or maintenance in server racks; wiring & terminations; setup & calibration of audio/video equipment; & operation of critical monitoring equipment.
7. Proficiency with basic IT concepts and hardware and software tools such as computer systems design, common operating systems & dependent utilities.
8. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to non-technical staff.

NOT REQUIRED BUT DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
1. Full color vision acuity & experience with camera color balancing, white & black balance, charting & shading for multi-camera productions. Color correcting video in post-production.
2. Experience using audio consoles and intercom systems in a live control room environment.
3. Proficiency with post-production media software such as Adobe Suite, AVID Media Composer, or Pro Tools.
4. Understand basic IP networking.
5. Ability to lift 30 pounds, climb ladders & work safely on elevated surfaces; pull & install wiring. Visual acuity & dexterity to work on small electronic components.
6. Ability to possess an unrestricted Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
7. Knowledge of, or experience with, studio & remote production lighting.
8. Strong organizational skills & the ability to multi-task & change focus quickly while maintaining accuracy, efficiency & attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, work independently & in teams.
9. Knowledge of FCC broadcast production standards.

Additional Information:

Expected salary range for this position will $21 - $27/hour depending on experience and qualifications.

This position also requires the ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time, and the ability to work some evenings, weekends and occasional overnight travel as productions warrant.
