Position Summary:

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) is a high volume laboratory that provides a broad range of veterinary diagnostic testing services to approximately 2,500 clients. The principal objective is to provide animal disease testing services to veterinarians across the State of Wisconsin and the country.

The WVDL works closely with an array of professional entities including the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA); the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protections, Division of Animal Health (DATCP); the National Wildlife Health Center (USGS); the Division of Public Health of the Department of Health Services (DHS); the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR): the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH); the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM); the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD); and the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA). These alliances provide for cooperation and information transfer as each organization pursues its mission. The WVDL is a National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) Core Laboratory and therefore is a part of our national defense against livestock disease disasters. A significant part of WVDL's work involves surveillance testing for the USDA and DATCP, as well as extensive testing for the national livestock genetics industry, much of which is located in Wisconsin. In addition, testing is performed in support of Wisconsin's fish industry. The WVDL has laboratories located in Madison and Barron, Wisconsin.

This is an Associate Microbiologist or Microbiologist position at the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Barron, WI. This incumbent will function as a microbiologist supporting the Bacteriology, Serology, Pathology and Client Services sections. This position requires the passing of yearly proficiency tests and successful completion of routine competency activities to maintain authorization for USDA, National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) and other testing programs. Occasional weekend work of 4 hours will be required.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Barron Laboratory Supervisor and scientific direction of the Microbiology Section Head.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in microbiology, biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related field of biological sciences.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Up to three years of professional lab experience in a microbiology or related laboratory is preferred, however, individuals with no professional laboratory experience will be considered.

Additionally, a successful candidate may have the following characteristics:

- Solid foundation and understanding of microbiological and serological laboratory principles, practices and methods.
- Familiarity with and the ability to operate basic laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Knowledge and understanding of aseptic laboratory techniques.
- Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety practices.
- Knowledge and understanding of quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) practices as they apply to laboratory tests and procedures.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Basic data entry computer skills, and knowledge/experience with Microsoft Office.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, prioritize duties, organize work, manage time, carry out multiple tasks and properly analyze reports.
- Excellent customer service skills and telephone manners.
- Knowledge of hard copy and electronic record keeping and file maintenance.

Salary will be assigned within the appropriate range, commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. An excellent benefits package is also included.
