Job Summary

The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) welcomes applications for The Director of Student Involvement ! The Director of Student Involvement is a University Staff position that serves as the leader of one of the cost centers for CU Student Government. The position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students in Student Affairs and provides strategic leadership and direction to the Center for Student Involvement. The CSI office manages the registration, advising, and financial operations for over five hundred student organizations. The office maintains a Student Organization Resource Center that provides a collaborative space and a variety of supplies that allow student organizations to achieve their missions. CSI offers programming in the following areas: Program Council, Dennis Small Cultural Center, CU GOLD Student Leadership Program, and general programming and student involvement efforts on campus. The CSI Director is heavily involved in the development of and advocation for the CSI budget, funded through the CU Student Government. The Director and CSI Staff provide advisement to the following CUSG boards: Cultural Events Board, the Distinguished Speakers Board, Homecoming Committee, and the Student Organizations Allocation Committee. The position is responsible for managing the development of a broad student engagement strategy including student development programs, and large-scale special events. This position also manages the team that provides program planning and production advice and support to various campus student organizations. The Director provides leadership on a campus level pertaining to event policies and guidelines and chairs the Student Experience Team and the Student Engagement Response Team. Directly and indirectly supervises a team of up to fourteen (14) full-time staff members including three (3) Assistant Directors, ten (10) other professional staff. This position also works closely with the CSI Advisory Board chair (Student Position).

Who We Are

The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is a service department of the University of Colorado Boulder Student Government (CUSG) within the Division of Student Affairs. We cultivate an environment for building vibrant, engaging and safe communities through programming, leadership development, cultural awareness and learning opportunities.

We also serve as banker, bookkeeper, travel agent, purchasing department and event manager for student organizations. Student organizations using university facilities must maintain an account and conduct their business through our office. Funding for student organizations granted from university sources is also placed in appropriate accounts through us.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Leadership and Direction of CSI
  • Provide strategic leadership, advocacy, and direction/ vision for up to 14 professional staff, and approximately 50 student hourly employees in CSI.
  • Hold full supervisory responsibility for a team of professional staff members including training, evaluation, compensation, promotion, and other employment-related decisions.
  • In collaboration with the student chair of the CSI Advisory Board, support member recruitment and development, annual schedule and agenda-setting, and ensure access to vital information or staff support to execute Board responsibilities and initiatives.
  • Actively strive to foster and maintain a workplace climate that is encouraging of employees and respectful of difference, as well as to build an inclusive environment that cultivates leadership development, intercultural engagement, and a sense of belonging in support of student academic success.
  • Identify and champion standard methodologies for effective student engagement strategies within the University of Colorado Boulder.
  • Coordinate the preparation of departmental publications and statistical and annual reports.
  • Manage, coordinate, and advocate for the overall budget for CSI, ensuring adequate planning for, and responsible expenditure of, fiscal resources in a manner consistent with all University policies and applicable local, state, and federal laws.
  • Engage in regular meetings with the leadership of the University of Colorado Student Government (CUSG). This includes regular interactions with student leaders and balancing the needs and desires of CUSG, with the Divisional and Campus needs.

Planning and Development
  • Provide leadership to ensure the effective operations of CSI.
  • Be responsible for the tracking and measuring of trends in student engagement, with the intent of continuing to develop an innovative and attractive student experience.
  • Continually monitor student needs and interests, as well as remains abreast of current models and practices in the field of student engagement; ensuring that staff utilizes relevant data, scholarship, and student development theories/models in the development and execution of the services offered by CSI.
  • Anticipate issues, preparing short and long-term plans for wide-ranging campus priorities related to student engagement. Set specific measurable goals and objectives, and support CSI Staff in the execution and achievement of stated objectives and results.
  • Provide resources and guidance to support process improvements for CSI and ensure that all department programs are aligned to meet current and future campus and community needs.
  • Develop, implement, and analyze assessment initiatives that foster student success; utilizing assessment data to enhance the student experience, report student engagement trends, and support CSI staff in implementing vital programmatic and policy changes.

Leadership and Campus Representation
  • Provide expert advice, consultation, and influence to faculty administrators, staff administrators, students, and the campus community in the areas including but not limited to: student engagement, student leadership, Program Council (a student council that brings artists to campus and runs productions of concert and video events), and student organizations.
  • Serve on high-profile leadership committees, on-campus and within the community, promoting policy and programs; and advocate for changes that affect student life and reinforces the development of a well-rounded student experience.
  • Provide leadership to the Student Event Response Team, including the recruitment, and training of staff members. Provide leadership in the deployment of the team when student-led events, such as protests, occur.
  • Provide leadership in crafting the divisional approach to student programming and the student experience.
  • Serve on a variety of division-, campus- and University-wide committees and workgroups to ensure a more seamless educational experience for students.
  • Represent CSI at Divisional leadership meetings, retreats, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Community Outreach and Collaboration
  • Cultivate and influence relationships with campus and non-campus partners (e.g., faculty, students, staff, neighbors, campus and local/city law enforcement authorities, local government officials, alumni, parents, local businesses, etc.) to provide collaborative, comprehensive thinking to student engagement.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and clear lines of communication with various campus partners, including the Rec Center, Health Promotion, Fraternity and Sorority Life, the UMC, and other departments across campus.


What We Can Offer

Salary range is $85,000 - $92,500.

What We Require

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • A minimum of five years of experience providing administrative and managerial oversight for University programming or student activities operations, including major program event planning and production, budgeting, advising student groups and/or student boards, from a student development theory framework.
  • At least three years of experience in managing and supervising full-time staff, or student staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, and administrators in a sophisticated system with multiple direct and indirect reporting lines within the framework of university and state policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to work some evenings and/or weekends.

  • Excellent organizational skills as demonstrated by the ability to balance numerous demands, evaluate competing tasks, and adjust planning, as needed.
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and facilitate the resolution of difficult challenges, including the ability to handle issues of sophisticated and extreme political sensitivity.
  • Capacity to simultaneously engage multiple issues of very significant, policy, operational, and legal complexity with a large and diverse number of constituencies.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Seven years or more experience in providing administrative and managerial oversight for University programming or student activities operations, including major program event planning and production, including budgeting, advising student groups and/or student boards, from a student development theory framework.
  • Four or more years of experience in managing and supervising full-time staff.
