Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Athletic Trainer for Recreational Sports provides evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for student participants in the sport club program, which encompasses approximately 39 clubs and 1,500 participants annually. This position has responsibilities related to policy and program development, assists with department-wide risk management initiatives, schedules and manages a staff of part-time Athletic Trainers who deliver on-site services, and may provide support to other areas of the Recreational Sports Department as needed. The Athletic Trainer for Recreational Sports reports to the Assistant Director for Structured Sports and Outreach.

Minimum Hiring Standards

National certification through the NATA BOC (National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification)
Commonwealth of Virginia Licensure or ability to obtain prior to start date
Two years of experience working as a certified athletic trainer in a sport/recreation setting
First Aid/ CPR / AED for the Professional Rescuer certification
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a University and Academic member at VCU
Ability to take initiative, problem solve and meet deadlines
Knowledge of best practices and standards in collegiate recreation
Ability to work evenings and weekends

Preferred Hiring Standards

Master’s degree from an accredited Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education ( CAATE ) program
Previous experience working in campus recreation
Previous supervisory experience
First Aid/ CPR / AED instructor certification
Ability to function independently and as a member of a team in a constantly changing environment
