Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Audit and Compliance Services is seeking an Auditor to join their team. This position will assist in planning, coordinating, and conducting audit, consulting, or special engagements under the direction of the engagement lead. Engagements may include those on the audit work plan or consulting requests and special projects that arise throughout the fiscal year. Special investigations of alleged fraud, waste, or abuse or violations of state, health system or university policies may also be performed. Internal department projects or responsibilities may also be assigned to this position. Engagement planning responsibilities include gaining an understanding of the area under review; evaluating risks and controls: developing objectives and engagement scope: and participating in the drafting of the engagement program. Engagement coordination responsibilities include managing time and workload to ensure
completion of assigned work by established milestones and due dates, proofreading
work for completeness and accuracy, and reporting any significant issues to the project
lead that could cause completion delays.
Engagement conducting responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

• planning and participating in meetings with and interviewing auditee personnel
• providing auditee and audit management with regular updates of status and potential
issues
• soliciting suggestions from management regarding areas of possible risk or
engagement coverage
• testing and assessing the effectiveness of internal controls (design and function)
• determining compliance with applicable policies and procedures, regulations, laws,
legal opinions, and special rulings
• performing analytical procedures
• testing transactions and reports
• auditing account reconciliations
• testing information technology general controls
• evaluating processes for efficiency
• gathering sufficient. competent evidence to support findings and conclusions
• drafting fact based findings and recommendations that add value or improve processes
or internal controls
• preparing engagement workpaper documentation

Minimum Hiring Standards

• Able to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing to all levels of management
• Knowledge of accounting principles and auditing standards
• Knowledge of internal controls both automated and manual
• Effective interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with department and client personnel
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
• Ability to manage workload to meet deadlines
• Ability to maintain integrity, objectivity, independence, and confidentiality
• Self-motivated and ability to perform assigned tasks
• Ability to perform as a team member
• •Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

• Some experience in accounting, auditing, business process analysis, or related fields preferred
• Some experience in healthcare preferred

Required Licenses/ Certifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or other degree with significant accounting coursework or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience preferred.
• Eligible to pursue certification ( CPA or CIA ) preferred.
