Early Childhood Lead Teacher - Wee Care Center

Position Category: Staff - Full-Time

Summary:
The Barbara Barrington Jones Family Foundation Wee Care Childcare Center is part of the Women's Success Center at Utah Valley University. The Center is dedicated to helping UVU parent-students succeed by providing high-quality, on-campus childcare.

Wee Care has openings for two early childhood education professionals to serve as lead teachers. We are looking for individuals who can create safe and nurturing environments where children can learn and grow. Lead teachers provide leadership skills within a classroom team, mentor part-time assistant teachers in multiple classrooms, and ensure proper standards and techniques are used.

Summary of duties include:

  • Develops and implements intentionally planned, age appropriate learning activities using Creative Curriculum Developmental Objectives. Conducts on going developmental assessments.

  • Supervises children at all times and promotes healthy emotional and social development with effective communication. Assists with physical necessities, toileting/diapering, medical emergencies, etc. to provide proper care. Uses Positive Child Guidance techniques to help children learn to manage their own behavior and models correct techniques for assistant teachers.
  • Manages daily tasks and teaching schedules in multiple classrooms. Mentors assistant teachers on classroom protocols, teaching strategies and instructional techniques. Partners with Center leadership to achieve enrollment, accreditation, and family engagement. Demonstrates the ability to work independently but shows a willingness to take direction.
  • Keeps detailed records of child's attendance, behavior, and development. Maintains continual communication with parents and/or guardians and management to discuss concerns, day-to-day problems, assessment outcomes, etc.

  • Maintains a healthy and safe environment for children by sanitizing materials daily and operating within State Licensing Guidelines. Conducts daily playground safety checks and maintains emergency classroom backpacks. Functions as director designee when assigned to open or close Center and is available to work flexible eight hour shift between the hours of 6:30 am and 6:00 pm.

    Required Qualifications:
    Associate’s degree in early childhood education or another child-related field with at least one year childcare experience under direct supervision OR hold a child development associate (CDA) certificate with two years of experience under direct supervision. Must be at least 21 years old and be able to pass a Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) background check and be willing to obtain a food handlers permit and first aid/CPR training.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    Knowledge
    Knowledge of child psychology and early developmental stages.
    Knowledge of child care practice in a professional setting.
    Knowledge of early childhood education curriculum development.

    Skills
    Demonstrated skill in effective communication with children, parents and professionals.
    Demonstrated skill in social perceptiveness and keen leadership skills in a classroom setting.
    Demonstrated skill in coordination between children, parents, assistant teachers and management.

    Abilities
    Ability to maintain order and classroom schedule.
    Ability to follow oral and written procedures and instructions.
    Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation.
    Ability to be warm, energetic and enjoy working with young children (6 weeks to 6 years).
    Ability to work with diverse groups and backgrounds.
    Ability to be a team player and cover other Wee Care Center responsibilities as needed.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, elementary education, child development, human development and family studies, or another child-related field plus two years experience in a professional childcare setting.


    Physical Requirements:
    This position performs work in a classroom for young children with the following specific requirements:
    • Must exhibit physical stamina necessary for daily interaction with very young children
    • Must be able to lift small children (10-50 lbs.)
    • Must be able to carry small children in arms for short distances
    • Must be able to move about on hands and knees and sit on the floor with children
    • Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation
    • Ability to read, write, understand and speak English to communicate with children and their parents in English
    • Must be able to work indoors or outdoors in all seasons
