Assistant Director - Affinity Engagement

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The Northeastern community has a tradition of giving back, and each day, we witness the impact of our community's remarkable generosity. Our students are pursuing co-ops in all corners of the globe, growing their cultural fluency and preparing to thrive in the world. Our faculty are delivering leading-edge scholarship, teaching and mentoring tomorrow's leaders. And our researchers are pioneering new lines of inquiry, accelerating discovery in emerging fields. Northeastern University Advancement and the Office of Alumni Relations play an integral role in engaging the Northeastern community to create a stronger, more sustainable, and bright future.

Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director for Affinity Engagement is a valuable member of the Office of Alumni Relations (OAR) Engagement Initiatives team who works to ensure alumni form and maintain a lifelong relationship with OAR and the university.

Under the direction of the Director for Affinity and Domestic Engagement, the Assistant Director will support the overall OAR affinity engagement plan to meet the needs of alumni through education, events, and activities for assigned affinity groups. The Assistant Director will manage a portfolio of affinity groups, including but not limited to class-based, organizational-based, cultural experience-based, and athletics-based groups. This person will develop and cultivate relationships with alumni affinity group volunteers that will impact the group's growth and continued connection to Northeastern.

The Assistant Director of Affinity Engagement will focus on:

  • Creating an annual affinity engagement plan, in partnership with the Director of Affinity and Domestic Engagement, that details the creation, execution, and management of new and existing affinity groups designed to meet the needs of alumni and the university.
  • Assisting in creating, planning, coordinating, and producing the programming of various signature OAR programs and act as the staff lead for the following signature programs: ArtsAlive!, Golden Graduates Weekend, and NU@Noon.
  • Coordinating with the Northeastern Cultural Centers to build affinity and produce alumni engagement opportunities that highlight the alumni connected to the Cultural Centers.
  • Conducting personal visits throughout the year to enhance OAR's understanding of its alumni needs and goals. This team member will also use these visits to connect alumni to appropriate Northeastern staff, if warranted.
  • Collaborating with Alumni Relations team members to enhance the existing relationships between affinity networks and domestic and international networks by developing and executing effective plans to establish, launch, and sustain new engagement opportunities.
  • Working to provide programs and services to meet the growing needs of Northeastern University, its alumni, and current students. Additionally, other duties and special projects may be assigned.

The Assistant Director must be able to represent the university and the OAR team in a professional, enthusiastic manner with a customer service and team focus. As a member of the Advancement Division, the Assistant Director of Affinity Engagement needs to understand and support philanthropy's role in engaging the Northeastern community.

Frequent work on weekday evenings and some weekends along with occasional travel are required. This position is required to perform their duties, in person, on the Boston campus.

    Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required. At least three to five years of experience in a combination of planning and producing all aspects of events and volunteer management. The ideal candidate will have excellent project management, organizational, communications (written and oral), interpersonal, public speaking, and computer skills; they will be detail oriented with a high level of self-confidence and enthusiasm; a self-starter who has a strong customer service focus; and the ability to interact professionally and diplomatically with alumni, volunteers, students, staff, faculty, vendors and external entities. They will also be able to work independently and in a team environment on several projects at a time. Experience working in higher education, with alumni a plus. The ability to do some lifting of heavy items and/or use of a hand truck for event supplies and equipment is required.

    Salary Grade:
