Description:
The Research Engineering Associate I will work as part of an integrated field operations crew under the direct supervision of the Field Operations Supervisor. The candidate selected will learn all aspects of the environmental, meteorological, and oceanographic data collection including the installation, maintenance, and repair of data collection systems installed in remote locations along the Northern Gulf Coast.
Responsibilities:
Operations:
- Travel extensively, often outside of normal business hours, by
vehicle and/or vessel to include extended overnight
travel.
- Operate University vehicles, vessels, and equipment in support
of field operation activities and requirements.
- Assist with installation, maintenance, operation of
environmental data collection stations and repair using various
hand and power tools.
- Learn the functionality of various meteorological,
environmental, and oceanographic data measurement systems and
sensors used.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Electronic Data Collection Systems:
- Set up and testing of various types of data collection systems,
sensors, and components.
- Learn and utilize proprietary software packages during the
setup, testing, and interrogation of various data collection
systems and sensors.
- Learn how to troubleshoot and identify issues and corrective
actions to increase, improve, and/or restore sensor/system
operations.
- Navigate various web pages/portals for the purposes of
analyzing data collected from various systems/sensors.
GPS System:
- Perform Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) surveys and
process through the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Online
Positioning User Service (OPUS).
Documentation:
- Complete required documentation related to system, sensor,
setup, and deployment.
- Complete required documentation related to site visits and
field activities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or related STEM
field.
- Experience in basic civil trades.
- Valid driver's license.
- Basic computer skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to:
- Obtain Transportation Workers Identification Credentials
(TWIC)-within three (3) months.
- Complete American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Certification -
within six (6) months.
- Complete US Coast Guard About Boating Safely Course.
- Obtain Transportation Workers Identification Credentials
(TWIC)-within three (3) months.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One (1) year experience working in a marine
environment.
- One (1) year experience with Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) to include the setup of GPS data collection
systems.
- One (1) year experience with environmental data collection
systems and sensors.
- Vessel operator with Safe Boaters Course
certification.
- Open water dive certified.
