Job Summary

The University of Michigan Law School (Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA) is accepting applications from exceptional individuals for the position of Assistant Dean for International Affairs.

Responsibilities:

The Assistant Dean will exercise overall responsibility for the daily operation of the Michigan Law School’s long-standing Center for International and Comparative Law (CICL) and strategic development of some graduate programs, international initiatives and relationships, and national and international outreach for the Law School.  The position reports to the Dean of the Law School and coordinates closely with CICL’s Faculty Director, other faculty members, and other senior administrators. Responsibilities include:

Graduate Admissions

  • Oversee recruitment and admissions of international students for the Law School’s LL.M., S.J.D., and Master of Advanced Corporate Law (MACL) programs, including final application read and recommendations for distribution of financial aid
  • Collaborate with faculty Global Affairs Committee (GAC) regarding admissions decisions and enrollment, reception of graduate level research scholars, and relationships with partner law schools across the globe
  • Oversee marketing materials and activities (emails, website updates and communication with prospective students) in conjunction with Law School’s Communications Department and CICL team members

Student Support

  • Advise on and oversee semester exchange programs. 
  • Support the advising of J.D. and L.L.M students interested in studying or working abroad, through established partnerships and ad hoc placements, and career advising for those students interested in international law jobs or careers; support the assistance and advice to L.L.M. students with respect to job placements
  • In collaboration with GAC, oversee student awards for legal study outside of the U.S.
  • Create student programming on international and non-U.S. law and careers through conferences, workshops, guest speakers, etc., and in collaboration with faculty and student organizations

Outreach

  • Work with GAC to develop exchanges, international programming, conferences, workshops, and guest speakers to support international legal scholarship
  • Develop and maintain relationships alone or with the Dean or faculty members with a variety of international constituents (law teaching institutions and other legal institutions outside of the U.S., international partner institutions and organizations, law firms, International Bar Association, employers, alumni, and donors, etc.)
  • Represent Michigan Law in the U.S. and abroad by presenting at conferences, publishing, speaking and otherwise engaging externally.

Required Qualifications

The Law School is seeking applications from individuals with the following qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree or equivalent
  • Knowledge about the U.S. legal system and legal education landscape
  • Significant experience in legal practice, legal education, or law-related work with a global dimension
  • Cross-cultural competency
  • Substantial organizational and administrative experience, including the ability to give close attention to program management details and to offer sustained follow-up on existing and new initiatives, as well as competence in budget management
  • Interpersonal skills for interaction and collaboration with, and support for, diverse stakeholders in the Law School’s and University’s global missions, including students, faculty, administrators, and alumni
  • Eagerness to represent the University of Michigan Law School externally, including with alumni, visitors, donors and potential donors, and representatives of other institutions in the U.S. and abroad
  • A capacity for creative and strategic thinking, including for program development regarding existing and future global initiatives
  • Must be available for, and experienced with respect to, regular international travel

Desired Qualifications

  • Foreign language competency
  • Experience travelling, studying or working internationally
  • Experience working in higher education, and global aspects in particular
