General Job Description:

Our laboratory studies the relationship between prostate cancer and the immune system using mouse models as well as other models to correlate to human disease. This laboratory position requires experience in basic laboratory techniques in molecular biology, immunology, and tissue culture and an ability to perform assay development.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience.
  • Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.
  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which include: basic tissue culture, cell separation methods, protein and DNA electrophoretic separations, qRT-PCR assays, flow cytometry, and other biological science techniques. Will utilizein vivomodels in experiments.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts and documents orders upon receipt.

Requirements:

Education:

  • BS/BA, or equivalent, in biological sciences, chemistry, immunology or related field required.

Preferred Experience:

  • A minimum of six months - 2 years of post-undergraduate laboratory experience in a comparable laboratory, or a significant independent research project, not related to normal course requirements preferred.
  • Cancer immunology and/or prostate cancer research experience highly preferred.

Skills:

  • Ideal candidates will possess experiencecultivating human or mouse cell lines,in vivotumor models, quantitative real-time PCR, flow cytometry, mouse genotyping, western blotting, among other techniques.
  • Applicants must be familiar with the operation of laboratory equipment such as PCR machines, real-time PCR machines, centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, incubator, spectrophotometer, light microscope, imaging systems and laminar flow hoods.
  • Candidate must be organized and familiar with aseptic technique.
  • Analytical skills: The candidate should have some familiarity with theory behind experiments and apply analytical skills such as student test to interpret experiments, including positive and negative controls.
  • Other skills: Strong communication skills, comfortable working in a scientific team, and conversant in Microsoft office and Graphpad is required.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
