Production Services Assistant

Position Description

Reporting to the Production Services Manager, the Production Services Assistant will support the performance production needs of the Peabody Institute, both Preparatory and Conservatory. The Production Services Assistant is responsible to independently manage the production of events and concerts with a primary responsibility being all weekend Preparatory events. Weekday work will include working as part of a cross-trained production team. The Production Services Assistant will support over 1,000 yearly events, including master classes, rehearsals, performances (music, opera theater and dance), and student recitals. As a member of the team, the Production Services Assistant will contribute to all aspects of the Institute’s production activities, but primary duties will be related to performance management for the Preparatory.

The Peabody Production Services Assistant acts as a liaison among the various individuals involved in a production, including the conductor, artistic directors, musicians, dancers, technical department, and the concert and ensembles teamtomaintain a safe, healthy, and inclusive workplace always.

Note: This position is full time, 37.5 hours a week but will have a nontraditional work schedule and will always include Saturday. Most work will be done on evenings and weekends from September through June. This position works 37.5 hours per week for 10-month periods September- June, leave without pay July-August.

Job Responsibilities

  • Independently manage weekend Preparatory ensemble, choir, and chamber group events including all setups, group rehearsals and final performance.
  • Assist the other Production Assistants, as necessary. That may include audio/visual setups, lighting load in, and weekday management of concerts and events.
  • Manage Preparatory student classroom and concert setups.
  • Work with Stage Coordinator to schedule work calls for Peabody’s student stage crew.
  • Independently manage Weekend stage crew.
  • Work with The Preparatory Academic Program Administrator to assure proper planning and logistics for weekend classes and performances.
  • The Production Assistant works to provide a professional and safe performance environment to the Peabody Preparatory students, faculty, staff, patrons, and guests.
  • Will be responsible to manage a number of public stage events independently.
  • Performs relevant duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Special Skills and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. Related stage production and audio visual, recording arts experience is required. Experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • 3 to 5 years of concert production or technical theater experience preferred.
  • Experience with producing events in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in classical music productions and knowledge of concert etiquette.
  • Must be able to work independently and supervise student employees.
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule to meet the need of Ensemble classes and performances both Preparatory.
  • Professional demeanor, superior communication skills, comfort in high-pressure situations, adaptable, solutions-oriented problem solver.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with proven ability to effectively prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work long hours and nontraditional shifts, evenings and weekends due to performance schedule.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Audio/video, stage lighting, stage production, rigging, and orchestral arrangements.
  • Stage management experience is a plus.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
