Research Technologist

The School of Arts and Sciences, Biology seeks aResearch Technologisttowork independently and make judgements using prior lab experience and scientific knowledge. The research technologist will study how the process of Sex Determination affects Development. The research technologist will be required to use cutting edge techniques such as precise, CRISPR modification of the genome.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Generating mutants in Drosophila using CRISPR
  • Generating recombinant DNA constructs
  • Perform immunostaining
  • Preparing stock solutions, buffers and media
  • Perform data analysis
  • Maintaining lab databases of reagents (strains, plasmids, antibodies etc.).
  • Attending and presenting data in lab meetings
  • Managing supplies, interfaces with vendors, ordering consumables and equipment,
  • Maintaining records, and upholding safety regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous research experience is required
  • Previous experience with molecular biology is a plus
  • Previous experience with Drosophila as a model system is a plus

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and good written and oral communication skills are desired.
  • Strong working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Illustrator, Photoshop, and DNA/protein molecular biology software (ex: Geneious) is preferred.

Machines and/or Equipment used on the job: Confocal microscopy, autoclaves, centrifuges,

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or laboratory environment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
