Department Statement

Colgate University is seeking a collaborative and creative thinker to join the Services and Shared Infrastructure ( SSI ) team who is motivated to create and support web applications. ITS endeavors to foster an inclusive environment that values diversity, professional development, creativity, and innovation to support the growth of individuals and the organization. Under the leadership of the CIO, ITS is embarking on a strategic planning process to align services and resources with several exciting new initiatives identified in Colgate’s Third Century Plan. Many new initiatives from Colgate’s Third Century Plan include new or redesigning websites to enhance the digital presence across campus with particular focus on websites for the arts and museums.

Accountabilities

This position is responsible for providing support and optimizing the user experience for Colgate’s web content management systems and other Colgate websites, which includes building new websites, enhancing existing websites, developing custom templates and add-ons, creating custom modules, and front-end development.

Accountable for maintaining and applying a combination of programming skills and creativity to create websites that align with established Colgate standards, with particular attention to aesthetically pleasing details, including element arrangement on the screen, color, and font that follows the university branding, web content style, and accessibility.

Accountable for maximizing the performance of assigned web applications and integration points within the area of expertise and have a breadth of skills to troubleshoot problems with applications and systems assigned.

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Working closely with departments on campus to gather requirements and provide technical consultation for existing and new websites, and other Colgate systems.
- Architecting enterprise web content management solutions including data, display, and information architecture.
- Managing all technical aspects of Colgate’s web content management systems.
- Participating in the development of contingency plans including reliable backup and restore procedures.
- Designing, creating and managing database structures in the development, testing, and production website environments.
- Leading projects and actively participate in assigned projects. Work with others, including team members, to meet task deadlines and communicate about the project status.
- Effectively communicating technical ideas to campus partners and other teams.
- Eagerly embracing current and emerging web technologies.
- Acquiring and maintaining technical knowledge of accessible technologies through reading, self-paced training, computer-based training or video-based training, courses, seminars, and other methods as necessary.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and inclusively with a diverse team and serve a diverse population.

Professional Experience/ Qualifications

- At least one year of professional experience, with an earned Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or a related degree; or an equivalent additional professional experience in essential duties and responsibilities.
- Basic understanding of how websites are created with HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Basic understanding of object-oriented programming languages such as Java or C#, or other programming languages such as Python, PHP, Javascript, etc.
- Basic understanding of web content management systems such as Drupal, WordPress, etc.
- Understanding of relational databases and the ability to create and manage database structures as needed for development and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated excellence in client contact and strong communication skills.
- Demonstrated understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for working in a highly collaborative environment with diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications

- Three to five years or more of professional experience, with an earned Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or a related degree, or an equivalent additional professional experience in essential duties and responsibilities.
- Proficient in object-oriented programming languages such as Java or C#, or other programming languages such as Python, PHP, Javascript, etc.
- Proficient in relational databases and the ability to create and manage database structures as needed for development and production environments.
- Proficient in web content management systems, preferably Drupal experience in key contributed modules, Drupal core API, creating custom modules, and the ability to architecture a website using Drupal modules such as Views, Panels, Paragraphs, etc.
- Proficient in creating websites using front-end web frameworks using responsive web design and web accessibility standards.
- Proficient in the maintenance and administration of Drupal modules and sites or other web content management systems.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.
- Experience deploying applications using Docker containers.
- Experience with mobile application development for Apple IOS and Android mobile phones.
