The position requires minimal supervision; thus, the employee is responsible for devising his/her own work methods to meet schedules and demands of the department. In addition, the employee may perform work in other trades and assist various individuals who comprise the UW Bothell Facilities Services department.

  • Work involves installation, modification, troubleshooting, testing, repair, calibration, and operation of a variety of plumbing, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, electronic equipment and systems used in daily building operations. This includes plumbing fixtures, electric motors, instruments, lighting fixtures, clocks, lamps, stoves, fans, air conditioners, refrigerators, and power tools. May replace worn bearings and other associated plumbing/electrical/mechanical components.
  • Monitor building automation system operations to ensure their normal functioning.
  • Respond to operation problems and emergencies in buildings on campus, including multiple non-contiguous structures, and take appropriate action to return equipment to normal operations.
  • Develop preliminary cost estimates for installations and repairs. This includes a commitment to Stewardship over department resources and funds; utilizing what we have, ordering what is necessary, proper use of tools and supplies, and acquiring only that which will benefit department staff while not creating a surplus of shared resources on campus.
  • Participate in predictive/preventative maintenance program. Prepare and record equipment operational logs and compile equipment operational data. Troubleshoot and repair central supervisory control system components.
  • In support of Facilities Services staff, will assist other classifications in performance of their assignments which may include construction and demolition activities, building and grounds maintenance which may include unclogging toilets and urinals, perform/assist in staff moves, HVAC, fire system work, irrigation work, parking pay station repair or even shoveling snow off sidewalks and roads.
  • Adhere to safety rules, regulations, and precautions. May be required to be test fitted and wear all appropriate Personnel Protective Equipment.
  • When required, will coordinate with campus Security or the City of Bothell Police and Fire during emergencies, fire alarm response, and disruptions of primary utility systems.
  • Actively participate in multi-trade team cross-training so all crew members are aware and able of how to respond to issues as they arise. Contribute to and utilize the department library including role and equipment-specific information and task flow charts.
  • Assist warehouse staff with unload/load of materials and supplies from delivery vehicles.
  • May lead and instruct helpers as required.

  • Four years of journey-level experience in one or more skilled trades, including experience in heating and air-conditioning systems, mechanical and electrical systems. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the Plumbing field; or four years of journey-level experience.
  • L&I Plumbing license, backflow assembly tester certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently without on-shift supervision and exercise independent judgment to solve problems; call in and coordinate the work of other tradesperson(s) during emergencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to compose and edit technical material; perform basic math; read and verify numbers; observe and read gauges and dials; use and read measuring devices; perform multiple tasks.

  • Experience with Johnson Controls Metasys, NAE’s and ASC’s, programming and working with the latest upgrades to the Metasys system software.

  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Must be able to lift/move 50 pounds.
  • The position will require the physical attributes of standing, sitting or keyboarding for extended periods; ladder climbing, lifting, stooping, reaching overhead, grasping hand tools; ability to operate a motor vehicle, etc.
  • May be required to obtain a Seattle Fire Department Certification AS-1 within one year of hire.
  • The position will require the employee to work in places other than an office environment. The employee can expect to work in areas of unusual heights; being around moving machinery; exposure to extreme heat/cold; possible exposure to dust, fumes, gases, irritating substances, etc.; exposure to excessive noises; exposure to radiant or electrical energy; working below ground; isolated work site.
  • This position is designated as one that performs an essential function. This means that the position’s incumbent must continue to report to work as directed in the event that the University suspends operations because of severe weather, natural disaster, or other emergency conditions.
