The Academic Counselor, Student-Athlete Support provides holistic support and first year advising to student-athletes of selected teams, serves as a NCAA eligibility advisor, and provides intensive learning strategies and academic coaching to a select caseload of athletes.

Essential Functions
  1. Direct Student Service: Provides individual holistic support to assigned undergraduate and graduate student-athletes through one-on-one appointments and referrals to university and community services. Holistic support includes topics such as organization, time management, study habits, course scheduling, major and career exploration, athletic injury support, and wellness referrals. Provides intensive learning strategies and academic coaching, developing individual learning and study plans for an assigned caseload of at-risk student-athletes. Academic skills include, but are not limited to, reading, and writing strategies, time management, enhanced study habits, and learning techniques such as note taking and test preparation. Assists with student-athlete recruitment by meeting with prospective students and families.
  2. First Year Advising: Advise and counsel assigned first-year student-athletes, assisting with their selection and registration of courses. Assist students with academic and social adjustment issues, making appropriate referrals to campus partners. Communicate and coordinate with faculty regarding students in academic distress; and with other University departments that support students. These include but are not limited to those units that support: living learning communities, athletes, international students, first generation students, students of color, students with learning disabilities, honor students, and other unique populations of students; make appropriate referrals to other University student services; monitor and evaluate each student’s academic progress throughout their first academic year; assist students with understanding degree requirements, University policies, academic regulations, and selection and registration of courses; maintain accurate record of advising meetings for student files; make recommendations to DUE/VPASS regarding exceptions to academic regulations and appeals, academic alerts, probations, and dismissals; provide recommendations and solutions to streamline advising processes that improve students’ academic experience and address their developmental needs.
  3. Task-oriented Administration: Maintains necessary records and documentation for the Department of Athletics, SASP, and Office of Undergraduate Education and Academic Student Services. Adheres to NCAA and AU compliance standards, monitoring student-athletes for academic eligibility, and reporting outcomes to the Director and Department of Athletics coaches and administration.
  4. Student-specific Consultation Consults with disability support team (ASAC) on student-athletes with disabilities. Consults with academic advisors, faculty, and university staff regarding NCAA regulations, student-athlete competition and travel, progress reports, academic alert notifications, course registration, and progress towards degree completion. Consults with Dean of Student staff regarding student-athletes of concern.
  5. Provides back-up support to the Senior Academic Counselor, Student-Athlete Support, as needed. Other duties as assigned.

  • This position is a full-time, temporary position currently funded through June 30, 2022. The continuation of this position is contingent upon funding.
  • This is a union-eligible position. The union-eligibility of individual position incumbents will be determined based on the incumbent’s employer of record.

Required Education and Experience
  • Master's degree
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience
  • Minimum of three years’ experience providing advising or student services support in higher education
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations pertaining to academic eligibility
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds
  • Strong written, oral communication and computer skills
  • Strong communication & organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of database and scheduling systems
  • This position contributes to the university’s responsibility for NCAA compliance
  • A strong academic support program for student-athletes provides an important tool for retention at AU
  • Strong interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with multiple demonstrated cultural competencies (LGBTQ, International, first-generation, socioeconomic class differences, students of color) to serve a diverse student population
  • Attention to detail along with initiative, drive, flexibility, and ability to excel in a multicultural environment

Preferred Education and Experience
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience
  • Experience using CRM Advise or similar tool
